It's quite a secluded place isn't it ?

How much does the cost of delivering materials etc contribute to the final bill ? I can't find it but I was following a chap who built a gorgeous house in the top of Scotland and I remember delivery being a constant headache. If it helps he was a music producer of some sort and commuted in an RS6 for a while.

It was a really good read.

Steve Carter (was HighlandRampage on twitter). Gordon Murray has a house close to his.

(I chatted to him as I wanted to get the score to one of his tracks that is on uchoob - to see if someone could create a score specific to a string quartet - but he’d discarded it  )

Particularly if (like his Neighbour (presumably Mr Murray)) you have a helicopter (as per page15)....... :geek:

Aside: 5mins sleuthing didn't confirm Mr Murray as the owner of that 'copter (I didn't expect to see his name, but I thought a company operator name might give a clue), but that picture was taken for Steve's house update posted July2006, and the 'copter was operated by Honister Slate Mine from October2006, the owner of which lost their life when they crashed it in 2011. link to BBC article
Aircraft is still in operation, so obviously wasn't written off in that accident.

Yep, they've left the building and it's been secured and sealed with metal security panels and doors.
Just catching up - fantastic news!

That's the one, I'll re-read that again as it was very well done.

Dream house too.

Neighbour update. Since eviction they’ve filed a claim against me in the county court (for an extension to the TIGA notice which is the time available to clear their property) and made an application to the High Court where a Judge has only granted extension of time for an appeal being filed out of time. So they’re also now putting an application in the high court.

It’s all complete rubbish, vexatious and harassment. They’ve obliquely accused me of a whole bunch of criminal stuff including stealing their stamp collection 😂 . The High Court appeal in particular should fall flat upon submission. And this all keeps ticking up more and more stress, distraction from work, and legal costs, it’s hard to describe how much this has fcuked with my life. The only benefit of the High Court application is that we might get an extended restraint order against them, which would be a massive win and prevent them from continuing their campaign of harassment.

It is absolutely mental.

If there’s one thing they’re really good at, it’s finding little loopholes to get an application lodged with the courts. Earlier on they had an appeal heard simply because they claimed they couldn’t hear the judge at the previous hearing. Of course they lost the appeal, because the transcript proved they had engaged fully at the previous hearing. But that whole appeal cost IRO £10k to deal with it, process, and have counsel defend. Simply because they lied about their hearing… meanwhile I’m the one who actually has significant hearing loss and wears hearing aids and I had coped fine 🙄

Is there any grounds to re-open the split of liability of legal costs ?? IIRC you have to pay yours, them theirs...

They can keep appealing if they want but if they loose, they must pay your fees ??

Something to try to discourage them

They owe me IRO £55k in legal costs (which is around half of total costs) and have refused to pay a penny of it. It’s also unknown if they have the means to pay too, however their eviction makes up for the costs as the property has reverted to my ownership now.

Project incoming: poked my head in the boiler cupboard to put something away and it was 1) very steamy, and 2) sporting a new water feature... F*CK.

Turning off the boiler meant that the leak went from warm to cold, but no reduction in flow. F*CK.

Turned the water off at the main and that stopped it. Neighbour a few doors away is a plumber, so I kindly offered him anything he'd want to come help. He's found the leak, some gizmo inside the boiler has broken. He's isolated it from the mains water, so that at least we have water in the rest of the house.

Emergency home cover policy activated, they can probably come out tomorrow morning.

As everything in the cupboard is wet, and the wallpaper has effectively been steamed loose, the lino ruined and the boards underneath wet, this might turn into a home insurance claim as I'm thinking there might be damage to the walls, possibly the joists, etc.

Embarking on bookshelf phase II. The previous phase involved a sliding ladder to access the higher echelons of bookshelf and as Mrs Newt is not big on height I think we will need something likewise

I feel your pain DJ...

We moved out of our main family home so I could do some house doctoring before it was sold (We rented for a while). I was travelling over 4 or 5 nights a week after work and painting, decorating, sorting the garden etc.

We then went on our Summer Holiday and when I returned back to the house, I opened the front door and was greeted by a Sauna. :o The Central Heating was going full blast for some reason - in the middle of summer with all the windows shut and bolted. I then stepped into the living room and saw it - a massive leak mark on the ceiling, directly under the hot water tank.

It turns our, completely unbeknown to us, that in the event of a power cut, when the power comes back on, the heating's default setting is "Constant". this had happened 8 days before. The constant flow of hot water for 8 days had fried some of the seals on the Hot Water Tank and it had leaked everywhere.

It was the final straw with the system - I paid a guy £1800 and he ripped out the whole thing and replaced it with a combi boiler

It is just fun, fun, fun!

Dehumidifier going in the boiler cupboard, and later a plumber is coming to see about repairing or condemning the boiler. Might look into heat pumps if we're ripping it out anyway.
