Good Samaritans...

Post by dinny_g »

They're still about... :)

Yesterday afternoon, for the first time in my life, I found myself in the embarrassing position of putting fuel in my car with no means of paying. I absent mindedly put my work phone in my pocket as I left instead of my personal one with Apple Pay and didn't' have my wallet.

The guy at the counter was fine about it - I left my name, address, car details etc and headed back home to get my wallet - which would have only taken 10 minutes tops. But then he called me back...

The next guy in the queue, a Taxi Driver, said he pay and absolutely wouldn't take No for an answer. He finally agreed to give me his mobile number so I could contact him to pay him back but he absolutely insisted. I txt'd him straight away when I got home but so far he hasn't responded yet. I hope he does.

It was only £15 (the car is going back to the Lease company on Friday) so perhaps he thought I was struggling for money (I was looking particularly scruffy) but whatever, he paid and saved the day.

I'll chase him again later and if he doesn't get back to me, I'll donate £15 to the local Hospice.

8-)

Reminds me of my first car (mk2 Escort) with a knackered fuel tank sensor. I filled it based on odometer trip meter reading, and kept a 5l can of petrol in the boot for when I got it wrong.

Folks were trading in a car, and borrowed my can as a safety net so they could hand it in with minimal fuel left in it. Tightarses. :D

So - of course - I ran out of fuel on the M8 coming back from uni. No can. Had to call rescue, who put me on a flat bed and took me to a garage. I had put in just over £8 before I remembered I'd left my wallet at home, and had about £2 in change on me. Recovery driver hadn't left yet, could see that I was in a panic, rolled his eyes and handed me a tenner out of his pocket. Fucking star he was. 8-)

I think I've told this story before but in the "it's nice to be nice" thread.

A few years ago I noticed that the person in front of me had left £20 in the self serve checkout, I caught up with them and gave it back. When I came out of the shop they were waiting and gave me a tenner for my good deed.

I dropped it out of my pocket on the way home, Hopefully someone else who needed it found it.

Easy come easy go

I'm sure it won't embed because it's on Facebook [Edit: it does!], but @ZedLeg, your story reminded me of this:
