Ford's 10sp auto

Post by mik »

The 2018 Mustang uses Ford's 10-speed auto.

Discuss.

Seems to me to be the most technologically advanced way of shifting gears for an automobile and therefore the best!!! 8-) 8-) 8-)

Have they just reinvented CVT but with fewer rubber belts?

I thought 8 in the M135i ZF was 2 too many.

Merc's 9 speed seemed good for me, but obviously Ford's is 1 better.

I think they're also launching a new 8 speed transverse auto to replace the aging 6 speed. It'll be fitted to the Mondeo and new Focus..

Seems even Ford think there are too many gears - it is programmed to do bulk upshifts where it deems appropriate.

I like that they’ve added two gear levers too. MORE IS BETTER!

I'm thinking I could do with a second, or maybe even a third reverse gear too. Hopefully that'll be next.

A lot of auto boxes have 2 reverse gears (Merc's 7 speed for example)

 i thought i was suggesting stoopidz. What is the second ratio for? Better mpg whilst cruising backwards? :?

No idea! But considering 'how' you reverse the gears, I'm surprised it's not 7 speeds in reverse!

Makes sense for pickup trucks that might be towing heavy things. Less so for things like the Mustang but I guess if it can skip ratios then no bother.

At what point though do we just fit CVTs and be done with it?

Other than the one in the Prius, show me a RELIABLE CVT

The 140 Series Mercs I drove years ago had a crawler reverse gear IIRC which slowed the rate of movement when going backwards. Not sure whether that necessitated an actual second reverse gear though.

Prius isn't even a CVT, it just behaves like one so that's what the motoring press refer to it as.

The current Honda system is apparently fine but it's not a high power/torque capable unit.
