A lot of auto boxes have 2 reverse gears (Merc's 7 speed for example)mik wrote: Thu May 31, 2018 9:35 am I'm thinking I could do with a second, or maybe even a third reverse gear too. Hopefully that'll be next.
No idea! But considering 'how' you reverse the gears, I'm surprised it's not 7 speeds in reverse!mik wrote: Thu May 31, 2018 10:17 ami thought i was suggesting stoopidz. What is the second ratio for? Better mpg whilst cruising backwards?

Other than the one in the Prius, show me a RELIABLE CVTsimon_g wrote: Thu May 31, 2018 12:02 pm Makes sense for pickup trucks that might be towing heavy things. Less so for things like the Mustang but I guess if it can skip ratios then no bother.
At what point though do we just fit CVTs and be done with it?
The 140 Series Mercs I drove years ago had a crawler reverse gear IIRC which slowed the rate of movement when going backwards. Not sure whether that necessitated an actual second reverse gear though.mik wrote: Thu May 31, 2018 10:17 ami thought i was suggesting stoopidz. What is the second ratio for? Prius isn't even a CVT, it just behaves like one so that's what the motoring press refer to it as.Simon wrote: Thu May 31, 2018 12:16 pmOther than the one in the Prius, show me a RELIABLE CVTsimon_g wrote: Thu May 31, 2018 12:02 pm Makes sense for pickup trucks that might be towing heavy things.
