Something that annoys me more than potholes is this country's insistence of placing inspection/man-hole covers EXACTLY where the wheels of vehicles will run over them.

This obviously results in the covers being pressed down and sitting lower than the road surface.

The positioning is cunning - you can run over them and risk damage, or you can either chance trying to pass with your nearside wheels between the cover and the curb, or trying and go around them entirely.

Either involves some swerving.

Most other countries don't do this - so you don't have a great "thud" every 100 yards or so as you run over yet another sunken inspection cover.

It's a ridiculous idea...

The whole problem is the habit of running services under the fucking road in the first place. Why not put them under the pavement, or better still under the verge?

Historical. Plus many other reasons. Anyway, we're faaaaar too far gone to change it, hence the need for better repair/maintenance practice than we currently enact.

It’s better when it comes to liability, most houses have their mains, water and gas connected through manhole covers on the main road which is not your property, hence when it goes wrong which it most often does where it’s connected it won’t be your bill to pay.
How about not having a sig at all?

They repaved the road out here, with those 'paintless' dividers to make people more careful of cyclists of whatever they're supposed to do.

About...ooh, nine months ago?

Already full of scars and potholes around the edges, making it significantly more dangerous for both cyclists and drivers.

Amazing.
