It always confuses me when manufacturers don’t do this. Because practical sports cars ftw. Particularly performance estates.John wrote: Wed Apr 08, 2026 9:24 am I spotted a green one of these towing a little trailer the other day, it surprised me that they were homologated to tow

Re: M5 test drive report and new car thread
Passed an M5 in a lovely deep blue when I was headed through Collingham in Yorkshire (funnily enough just past the Porsche dealer there) and there is something about a deep colour that really picks out the shape of this car. Purple still the better shade though.

Running in is going to be complicated - I think ideally I should not use hybrid mode so the engine isn’t miles behind the rest of the car because it still needs the 1200 mile oil change.
Looks fab Simon and exactly the car i would expect to see you in bearing in mind i think your 540i Touring was the last car i saw you in.
I’m colourblind so the subtlety of the colour is somewhat lost on me i suspect but i do like the colour. I like the new M240i 4wd in the Thundernight colour
Re: M5 test drive report and new car thread
Thanks Mike - it was 2010 that I sold the E39 so how time flies. And yes indeed, I've had four V8 5-series Tourings previously (didn't have a V8 version of the F11 because I couldn't find one and the G31 wasn't offered as a V8) so I really had to get one I suppose
Funny how the social media screams about the weight and size of it can take the edge off a new car launch; it was Audi and the nearly as heavy RS5 which made me look at it again and realise it was more interesting than I'd initially thought.
I did take the opportunity to photograph it next to a 2-series in Thundernight when I picked it up. It's similar but clearly different when next to each other. God knows why BMW have made so many different shades of purple but I won't complain

The M5 looks ace @Jobbo
Being able to drive to and from work on pure EV (and then recharge at home) is a complete winner too
Look forward to hearing about the ownership experience over the next couple of years...

Re: M5 test drive report and new car thread
I see BMW has an update that introduces AI to the Sat Nav.. probably more helpful in a hybrid. Apparently it comes up with more suggestions but I think that may mean more button presses and hence more annoying.
Have you added your card to your phone? Opens with NFC and will start the car when phone placed in charging dock.. it’s a helpful back up but I like it unlocking when approached so still use key.

I have this feature (iPhone and card) on my current car , and also the last 4 BMWs ive owned and I just cant bring myself to trust it.IanF wrote: Fri Apr 17, 2026 9:40 am Have you added your card to your phone? Re: M5 test drive report and new car thread
I have added my phone as a key, but my phone doesn't have a tracker fob on it so I can't practically use it that way. I can at least use it to unlock the car to unplug or plug in the charging cable when I have left the key in the house
Re: M5 test drive report and new car thread
I’m wary of anything where you don’t need to press a physical button on a key fob to gain entry to a car. I found a setting in my car to disable keyless entry, so I’ve got that turned off. Pressing a button on a key is no hardship for me if it makes stealing the car even 1% harderMikeHunt wrote: Fri Apr 17, 2026 10:21 amI have this feature (iPhone and card) on my current car , and also the last 4 BMWs ive owned and I just cant bring myself to trust it.IanF wrote: Fri Apr 17, 2026 9:40 am Have you added your card to your phone? Pretty good two car garage I reckon. Colour looks lovely too, first M5 I've seen it on and that car definitely looks better in the non-black/grey colours.

Re: M5 test drive report and new car thread
I've been left unable to start my M3 because of just having a digital key. Issue wasn't getting in/out, but because of the terrible BMW wireless charging pad which seems to try and heat the iPhone to the temperature of the sun. The pad thought there was still an iPhone in the charging area, so wouldn't recognise the phone being put in.jamcg wrote: Fri Apr 17, 2026 12:40 pmI’m wary of anything where you don’t need to press a physical button on a key fob to gain entry to a car. Watched it already. Harry shares my view of it - the hybrid stuff is what makes it such a good everyday car. But it feels like he hasn’t got under its skin yet. I’ve done nearly 1100 miles so far and it’s great on the motorway but it’s also got some dynamic magic which makes you want to drive it enthusiastically.
I have given it full throttle now, but only very briefly and at relatively low revs. I don’t think I’ll ever wish for more power.

Harry's car has the ultimate pack, which is about a £19k option - there's no saving over speccing options individually although you can't get parking assistant professional except as part of this pack; for that you pay about £500 based on all the other options being RRP.
The wheels Harry said were an £850 option I didn't remember being an option on mine and they weren't - the option is £850 to spec P Zero R tyres rather than the standard tyres (mine came on P Zeroes).
I think people are speccing the ultimate pack for the carbon ceramic brakes, to reduce brake dust. But the regen braking already reduces brake dust massively. There was a car the same colour as mine within Sytner stock which had the ultimate pack and it was £20 more than mine after discount; they basically weren't discounting any options. Mad.

Re: M5 test drive report and new car thread
I do wonder if that's why they're doing more long term loaners of these just now or for extended road trips - everyone I've seen who has had one for a while seems to absolutely love it whereas a lot of the less positive reviews were from people who had them for shorter periods of time.Jobbo wrote: Sun Apr 19, 2026 7:55 pm Watched it already. Are there any finance contributions from Sytner on these at the moment or no deals to be had? BMW seem to go from one extreme to the other with finance.
