Car insurance
Re: Car insurance
That's excellent work Steve - surely the effort involved in shuffling the NCBs around would only save a tenner or so?
Re: Car insurance
I don’t know if any of you chaps are eligible for Saga car insurance (over 50 only) but the prices my dad pays with them are ridiculously cheap - the M cars are £150 each.
Something to look forward to once one hits 50

How about not having a sig at all?

I'm actually surprised yours is "only" £1k ! It's been more in the past, hasn't it ?Gavster wrote: Tue Jul 08, 2025 9:48 am Your insurance for five cars, including some rather nice ones, is only £250 more per annum than I paid for one white goods car![]()

Re: Car insurance
As a man his early 40s (shut up, i’m “early” for the next week and a bit) with two modified vehicles, i’m just under a grand all in - £550 on the van and £400 on the Elise. My mrs is another £500 or so on her 320d.
I’d be very happy with all those good cars totalling that!

Re: Car insurance
IIRC I did check them out and they weren't as cheap as I'd hoped - but I guess they specialise in insuring Corollas.

Re: Car insurance
Indeed - they want £718.08 for the Disco ! Not even close.
Re: Car insurance
Ooooo having turned 50 the other week I wish I had seen this as I renewed yesterday as the premium on the Mini had actually gone down, which was nice.
Certianly nicer than the bowl screening kit I got though as a pressie from the NHS!

I stuck details into their website last year and they were ridiculously expensive for me.Mito Man wrote: Tue Jul 08, 2025 10:21 am I don’t know if any of you chaps are eligible for Saga car insurance (over 50 only)

Re: Car insurance
Renewal time on the Ateca and because I live in the ghetto, my premium was just over £1k last year, so there was a lot of room to improve that
The usual comparison sites offered as low as £500 this year for skanky 'essentials' policies with trackers etc - screw that. Once I eliminated policies which looked like they'd be horrendous to claim against, the new baseline was around £775+ for decent cover.
My renewal with Admiral was too high at £850, so I went on their website to cancel the auto-renewal. It asked me a whole load of questions about the policy, and nothing had changed, so the renewal price remained the same. I clicked on the "I still want to cancel my renewal" button and surprise surprise, they found a way to knock another £73 off. Win.
Also very pleased that my insurance has gone down by more than 20% this year

Re: Car insurance
You've reminded me - our office insurance was up for renewal last month so I spoke to the broker about a multi-car policy to see what they offered. They said they can but it won't be anything like competitive with Admiral; it's aimed at people with a load of garaged exotics which they barely use (at least he was honest). So the continual issue of how to insure a collection of cars remains unsolved; you either go with Admiral or (I think) LV, or you pay through the nose. Since I burned my bridges with LV I now effectively have just one insurer to choose from. Feels risky.

Re: Car insurance
What did you do to burn bridges with LV? I must have missed that.
Re: Car insurance
They messed me around with proof of NCB (went to them with 14 years, they gave me proof of 9 after a claim-free year so I made a complaint to the Ombudsman about their sharp practice). I don't think they'll have blacklisted me but I don't want to find out the hard way if I insure with them and have to claim.

Apparently insurance goes up a decent amount when a car is valued at more than around £80k. If the CSL keeps appreciating, it’ll probably reach that and cancel out any savings on insurance from being over 50!

Re: Car insurance
I thought I had a couple of policies due for renewal, but hadn’t seen any reminders, had a look and everything was still insured, thought maybe I’d got my dates mixed up.
Did a search, realised they’d been going to an email I wasn’t getting. Sorted that out and two policies had renewed last month.
X5 dropped from £400 to £280, compact went up £30
Will set reminders to shop around next year

Who are you with? I just put in details to Saga after seeing them on here and they are 3 times what I’m paying now!integrale_evo wrote: Mon Nov 17, 2025 12:36 pm I thought I had a couple of policies due for renewal, but hadn’t seen any reminders, had a look and everything was still insured, thought maybe I’d got my dates mixed up.

Re: Car insurance
I’m looking at insurance for my next car on money supermarket, it quoted me £720.50 per year with quote me happy.
I added an aftermarket exhaust to see how much extra it would cost and the quote with the same insurer came in at £636.
Not sure how heavily modified the car needs to be to get the price below £500
