Decent Recent TV

Re: Decent Recent TV
Finally watched it earlier. Proper presenter

On-topic : ”The Assembly” on ITV
Proper challenging watch at times, with more than one lumpy-throat moment.
Jade Thirwall (from Little Mix apparently) was on tonight and came across very well. David Tennant also came across very well. Danny Syer came across as I expected. Gary Lineker next week apparently.

Second series concluded last night. It was really good…dinny_g wrote: Wed Apr 03, 2024 9:40 am Just binged The Last of Us
Looking forward to the second series
However…
Spoiler
It finished on a perfect note for the series overall. Done, dusted. Leave it there
But like all these things, they’ll drag it out with talk of series 3 AND 4 in the offing.
I get there may be more material from the game to use but that doesn’t mean you have to.

Re: Decent Recent TV
Watched the first four episodes of Clarkson's Farm 4, as enjoyable as ever.
You settle up, I'll go get the Jag.
Re: Decent Recent TV
Mobland - on Paramount +
This should be standout TV given the pedigree - Guy Richie produced and the cast is just nuts. Tom Hardy, Helen Mirren, Paddy Considine, Pierce Brosnan, Geof Bell, Jordi Molla, Toby Jones
But it misses the mark and not just because of Brosnan's awful Irish accent
It's mad that of the two main Irish characters, one who is Irish has a terrible Irish accent and the other, who's quintessentially English does a much better job. I guess 2 seasons on 1923 has helped.
I'm not sure why it misses but it just does - I'll still watch the second series... if it gets made.

Re: Decent Recent TV
I've been watching this too and discussing with ScottA. Soooo much potential with that cast plus Guy Richie. DC Fontaines Starburster as the title track helped draw me in too.
I've also really struggled with the accents, and casting Brosnan as the head of the crime family really jarred initially, but over time..... nope - he still hasn't managed to convince me.
Hardy, Considine and Bell all do great in isolation, but the sense of impending danger/menace that Richie often manages to create is just lacking oomph - for some reason.

In saying all of the above - I've now watched every available episode, so it's obviously still got something that grabs me.
Re: Decent Recent TV
Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman are back but without silly electric bikes.
Long Way Home Think it's Apple TV but it's in all the usual places. Very relaxing and watchable.

Re: Decent Recent TV
It's Helen Mirren's accent which grates more and totally takes me out of it when she's speaking! Brosnan's sounds ok for the area he's actually from, but I don't think he was there for that long growing up.
Anyway, it's good, nonsense fun, love the soundtrack and the usual twists and turns. Good to see Toby Jones popping up in anything and I like the way Hardy is playing his role.

Has anyone mentioned how utterly brilliant the second season of Andor was?

Re: Decent Recent TV
It really doesn't to be honest - no one speaks like that - apart from Sean Connery in Derby O'Gill and the little PeopleAscender wrote: Thu May 29, 2025 12:21 pm Brosnan's sounds ok for the area he's actually from, but I don't think he was there for that long growing up.

Mirren's is East Galway/South Mayo, maybe north Clare so I'm guessing that's where her dialog coach is from. It's still pretty ropey but more realistic than Brosnan's

Re: Decent Recent TV

I'm sure it's based on some regional County Kerry accent but I could be way off the mark.
My only defence is that I think he had a dialog coach for the specific thing he was going for and I also met a couple of tourists last week who spoke similarly to him. I think I did an ok job of hiding my "wtf" reaction.

Re: Decent Recent TV

Anyone who tries to do an "Oirish" accent tends to sound like that - a bit like if you ask a yank to do an English accent, cockney is the default (or Public service broadcasting from the 40's )
And I can't talk - my Scottish accent is just a bad Rab C Nesbitt rip-off...

Re: Decent Recent TV
That's how we all sound to the southerners.
I was on a course yesterday with someone who has moved up to the western isles from "darn sarf". Proper cockney fella. Lovely lad but most of the others on the course looked at him like they were trying to understand Gerald from Clarkson's Farm.

Re: Decent Recent TV
Just finished series 3 and it's as good as ever - following on from series 2, it focuses on 3 or 4 surfers and their evolving roles. McNamara is hitting mid 50's and slowing down a bit following a career of concussions. Lucas Chumba is now the at the fore pushing things in the same way McNamara and others did 10 years ago, Justine DuPont starts a family but will be back, CJ Macias (McNamara's brother in law) is now taking on that mentor role, helping new people to adapt to the wave and Cotty is still a big kid who won't grow up.dinny_g wrote: Tue Sep 19, 2023 12:22 pm 100 Foot Wave - Series 2
I could have sworn I put up a post about Series 1 but I can't seem to find it. 6 Parter following the teams Tow surfing 80 and 90 foot waves at Nazare in Portugal and waiting for the mythical 100 foot wave.
Series 1 was focused on the original teams, living and working almost in isolation from the rest of the surfing community. This would have been 2010/2021 ish... They were working with the local government to develop the area for surfing. It ended with Garret McNamara (the main character in the series) setting a new world record and very quickly seeing it beaten. Then the inaugural Big Wave Competition.
Series 2 picks up the story around 2020 and 2021 - You can tell already that the focus on this series is going to be the crowds. Where there used to be 5 or 6 teams out (Jet Ski Driver and Surfer), now there are 30 or 40 on big days.
Its fascinating stuff and the footage is awesome.
Edit - binged 5 hours this evening to complete the series. It’s not focused on crowds but more his the “older guard” bring the younger guns through.
It’s a brilliant series and we’ll worth a watch, even if you’ve never surfed
It's amazing footage, particularly the Cortes Bank episode. But the 100 foot wave still hasn't been found - 86 feet is the current record.
