Decent Recent TV
Re: Decent Recent TV
I'm seeing a lot of things referring to Adolescence as being about "male rage" but I think that's missing the point?
That rage is the result or byproduct of a culture where kids are excused to toxic masculinity, where social media helps amplify the very worst things that young men can hear about women, and how men should think and behave
I have two 18 year old nephews, and while I know neither of them holds these views, it does really make me worry about what they're exposed to (either directly on their own devices, or from friends/acquaintances, class mates etc)

Re: Decent Recent TV
While I agree that’s what it’s about, the storyline doesn’t have a resolution - which is probably the right ending because for the parents there is no answer, no resolution. They’ll forever wonder what they could have done differently.
The thing is, the toxic culture is mentioned only a few times and rather heavy handedly, like it’s been shoehorned in as opposed to being integral to the story. If it had simply been about a child who turned out to be a psychopath then it would have been exactly the same except for a couple of minutes of monologues.

Re: Decent Recent TV
The influence of movies and video games pales into insignificance compared to the shit available on social media. That’s where the real worry would be, for me.
Although not a foolproof system, games and films are rated for age and also recognised by most as being ‘not real’, unlike social media where there’s violence, misogyny and racism churned out every minute with very little moderation.

WhatsApp is the one you need to watch your kids on
Some of the stuff I get sent on WhatsApp is horrendous. To the point I have to tell people don’t send me that.
One that stuck in my mind was a motorbike hitting a car at 180mph, followed by footage of a head with bits of spine and organs attached. Genuinely traumatising footage, that as an adult you can compartmentalise it and not have it affect you too much, can’t imagine what it would do to a child seeing things like that. Then there’s the videos of people getting stabbed

When I see young kids with unlocked phones it makes me quite upset. The temptation for them must be huge and it’s 100% the parents fault for what they see.
Maxwell gets a phone at the start of the next term as he will be riding the bus to school. It will be a phone with the basics on, permission needed to load any apps and an understanding that it’s our phone, not just his.
Oh my kids a good kid, yeah I’m sure if a friend sends him something gory he/ she won’t look at it, of course not. It’s setting themselves up to miss out on a large part of their innocent youth, the longer they stay that way the better, being a grown up can be no fun at all at times.
Dave!

I'm still scarred from some of the stuff I used to see on a website called 'Rotten' ( I think that was the name) back in the 90's....granted it's even easier to access now, and can be 'forced' on you rather than seeking it out, but kids are inquisitive and peer pressure will mean they'll probably look at it regardless.

1923 on Paramount
Series 2 concluded yesterday and rounded the stories off nicely.
It isn't as good overall as 1883 (IMO) in that it's 3 separate stories arcs, 2 of them merged in last nights finale but the other, while connected to the ain Yellowstone series, had no bearing on the other 1923 stories. Series 2 is far superior to series 1. Jerome Flynn is very good in it.
Overall 7 out of 10

Re: Decent Recent TV
I've also started Zero Day on Netflix. 2 episodes in and looking good so far.
Re: Decent Recent TV
Series 2 is now in BBC iPlayer and is just as good as the first. OK so Travis Fimmel's performance owes a lot to Clayne Crawford's in the Lethal Weapon TV Series but it's well written and well made series.dinny_g wrote: Wed Sep 27, 2023 12:27 pm The Black Snow - a young Aboriginal school kid was murdered in rural Queensland and a time capsule, buried shortly before her murder and opened 25 years after her death contains a letter suggesting she knew her killer. Story follows the Cold Case Officer assigned to investigate. 2 episodes in, plenty of twists and turns already and looking good so far.
It's not Breaking Bad or the Sopranos but its a quality little 6 parter .

The Residence
(Netflix)
We're only one episode in, but pleasantly surprised that it's quite amusing. Well paced flow, and the "doll's house" depiction of the Whitehouse layout works superbly.

It's really good, I binged it last week. Very much like the Daniel Craig Knives Out films and one is every referenced in an episode title.mik wrote: Wed Apr 09, 2025 9:33 am The Residence

5 Episodes in, 1 to go (USS Callister).mik wrote: Mon Apr 07, 2025 11:57 am Series 7 of Black Mirror released (via Netflix) on Thursday.![]()

They're distinctly average, IMO - none feel very original and lacking any real punch.... but thought "Eulogy" was brilliant. Favourite by a mile, but apparently USS Callister is meant to be the best of the lot, so we'll see.

Re: Decent Recent TV
The Pitt... Set an ER/ED in a Pittsburgh hospital, its 15 episodes set over one long day shift in "real" time a la 24. Very addictive, entertaining, realistic... as a warning, there's a couple of very tough plots to follow involving kids... We binged season one over the weekend. It's one of the biggest shows in the US just now and not available anywhere over here legally which seems nuts.
Cheers,
Mike.
