Brothers work have just got their Demo Renault 5. He's bringing it home tonight for me to drive. These are temptingly chear through the works salary sacrifice scheme. circa £300 a month fully maintained with insurance and tyres plus you get a home charger installation included.

I think we're going to get an R5 at some point - not in a mad rush but I like them, my wife loves the denim interior and I think it would be a useful thing to keep our (her) mileage down on other cars.

I will report back findings. It would need to be good to tempt me out the 128Ti cos i really like that. but the prospect of a few hundred quid savings a month between the lease and fuel are tempting.

It would probably necessitate chopping the Mini for something else however as with a range of 200 miles it would be useless for further trips. The mini is definitely not a distance car either so i wouldn't fancy a trip to Anglesey or Silverstone in it. Mrs A likes her yellow convertible however.

Quite a long-winded job to do chain/guides but not too difficult. The cost will be in the labour.

It needed a water pump and actuator. Think its one and the same on this engine. Now fixed but not cheap at £540 Lots of labour.

Its a "one" instead of a cooper. Still the 1.6 prince engine so expect it will be the same.

My dad said the XJ needs a service whenever we have some time so I have a look online to see what it needs. It’s all cheap parts and seems designed to never even need to be worked on underneath (wonder if not draining the oil from the pan is a contributory factor to them snapping cranks - surely the sludgy metal impregnated oil won’t be fully sucked up?). Even the fuel filter sits on top which I’ve never seen before.

Now the shit bit. You can’t reset the service computer with a combination of button presses like any other car in the world It needs a £450 Autel or some dodgy Jaguar SDD software which sometimes bricks the car and only works on windows 7/10 Pro. Look around and everything is windows 11…
Apparently that is illegal in America so their cars can be reset by doing some voodoo dance within the car.

Whoever designed that system at JLR I hope you get the bad aids.

I think my iCarsoft unit would do it, it used to do my XF.

Apparently icarsoft v2 used to work but no longer does after an update and no one has tried icarsoft v3.
It is hard to really find much info online though, presumably because the typical XJ owner is over 90 and unable to work on their car.

It will pay for itself on the first day. Just looking online and the Jaguar oil change + all the filters is £800. The Autel is currently on offer for £385 on their own website which seems like a good deal for a device as capable as it is. Just waiting on tech support to confirm with compatibility with the car VIN as I don't trust the one make forum much

FINALLY getting around to the MINI front wishbones. It’s not a fun job but I have the subframe out and it only took 2 hours. I was expecting it to take a lot longer.

I still need to order the ARB bushes ( at myself) so I can’t put it all back together today. I’m pondering how far to go to town cleaning and replacing stuff “while I’m here”.

Compact has had its first wash of the year, I used it several days this week so was actually dirty rather than just grubby and green around the edges

Also took the alfasud out for a half hour run into town and back, first drive of the year, first drive since fitting the new heater matrix. All feels good, no sticky brakes, no leaking fluids

If you're keeping the car long term, then go over the top, otherwise put I in a half decent effort that's "good enough"

After changing the febi bearing for an skf on the mito… It still made a noise

So today I decided to look at the right hand side. Took the brakes off so I could give it a free spin. Yep, feels dry and gritty at myself.

Fitted the febi bearing I’d taken off the other side. Lovely and smooth. Should have checked it properly last time instead of assuming something I’d done had gone wrong.

Actually impressed at how closely lifed they are, less than a thousand miles difference between them on a 90k mile car before they started getting noisy.

Great weather today like lots of the UK so I decided to take the '66 Beetle for a short run. I parked it in the garage in September and haven't touched it since. I had plans to lower the front end with dropped spindles over the winter but motivation was low with the cold weather. The battery was left connected and I hadn't used the trickle charger as I'd intended so I turned the key with a little apprehension but the engine spun over at it's usual speed, the starter is the original 6v so spins over very quickly as the car has been converted to 12v. After a good few pumps of the accelerator pedal and about ten seconds of the engine turning over it burst into life

The old Beetle takes a bit of readjusting too with drums all round and a mighty 30 odd BHP. My mate called round in his WW2 Jeep and we were comparing stats and deciding who was the slowest up the local hills
