Puss in Boots: The Last Wish

One of best villains ever. A down on his luck dog who is an ode to positive thinking. What more do you want.
Cute cats doing stunts? No problem, start sequence is fab. Amazing.

Revenge - Coralie Fargeat of The Substance (also great, obvs) fame does a barmy 70s revenge thriller with a John Carpenter-esque soundtrack. Excellent.

Snack Shack - Well told coming of age thing with two excellent leads. Rather good.

Last Wish absolutely came from nowhere for me and I remember being in the cinema enjoying more than anything I've paid to see lately.

The villain is epic, many kids in the session I went to with the family actually cried.

Really good up until the last twenty minutes where it just went completely off the rails and undid all the tension. Such a weird story choice.

I knew it was a body horror movie going into it, but I did not expect it to go the way it did in the final act. I mean, WTAF. That ending was well done for what it was, I still enjoyed it.... but it did make me think there was another way to go with it and I'd like to see that movie.

Really good to see Demi Moore getting some recognition for it though - she's brilliant and it would be cool if the Oscars followed the lead of the Golden Globes.

It is good. The suspense is well maintained and you get the sense of how much on edge they must have been.

Alien having just finished my Christmas book, the novelisation of William Gibson's Alien3 script I'm going to revisit the films (the decent ones 1,2,4,7) and though I'd introduce my horror living daughter to the Xenoverse.

I thought it was brilliant and better than I remembered.

She said it wasn't that scary

PS Corridor Crew on YouTube just did a great episode on Aliens.

Very different films, but absolutely worth seeing where it all started and lots of Geiger goodness. It's certainly head and shoulders above every other Alien flick except Cameron's masterpiece.

edit to add. Even the extended directors cut is still under two hours, I can't remember what the specific changes are but I think any version is good.

Watched Furiosa and was pretty disappointed tbh. Had none of the energy or spectacle of Fury Road.

Unsure as to whether I’ll even bother getting a physical copy for my collection.

Give it a few months, and set aside an evening to watch Furiosa followed by Fury Road, and it works a lot better as a slow burn to a monster action blowout.

Works way better that way.

Carrying on with the awards list, tonight we watched American Fiction (Prime).

It was brilliant with an astonishing cast. As intended the protagonists main point was played out in the story with both clarity and a dignified sparseness that made it very elegant.

I especially liked the way they portrayed the writing of the book.

8.5/10 panderings.

Recommendation taken - that was really great.

Fateful Findings by Neil Breen

This film gets a solid 4 out of 10 on IMDB and I suspect that’s a mixture of people voting either 1 or 10. It’s low budget, awkward, nonsensical, and a vehicle for Breen to make himself into a hero and inhabit a world where women don’t wear underwear. The script is dire and the acting wooden. At the same time it’s compelling and hilarious. Watched the whole thing and despite it being a terrible film I enjoyed it, basically it’s so bad that it’s good.

Also features a Ferrari Testarossa.

I’d give it 9 out of 10 for entertainment though

Kneecap

Brilliant, even if you’re not a fan of the band it’s worth watching.

It’s as much a story about the Irish trying to protect their cultural history as it is about the band.

Started watching it Sunday night but unfortunately had a big day Monday so had to head to bed. I did grin again at the colour-to-b&w switch.

The cinemaphotography overall is superb - helped in someway by the Black and White. Its filmed at odd angles (seems to be a Branagh thing as the recent Poirot series is the same) but there are so many clever little parts - a character walks past the camera but ends up perfectly framed in a mirror in the other room, Judy Dench framed in a window, the colour cinema screen reflected in her black and white glasses. Love it

It's lovely to look at and to listen to.
