Good old frameless doors and cold weather.... driver's side window has cracked along the top edge. Let's see how good Autoglass are for the Highlands....

Gummi-Pflege on the seal prevents this, or even a wipe on the seal with a clear silicone shoe-shine. This kinda thing....

The weird thing is, I opened the door, left the car to heat up, cleared out the channels etc, closed ok. Went to the village, came back, then closed the door and it cracked when back in the channel. So not sure what happened exactly.

But thanks for the tip about the Gummi stuff, will get some now.

The glass is a special order but insurance covers it with £115 excess.

Gummi Pfledge is awesome. Always give my seals a good once over with the Gummi every 6 months.

I assume the glass (normally) does the frameless-window routine of dropping 10mm or so when you open the door, and raising to it's final seal position again when you close it? If so it could be related to that, as the glass possibly couldn't drop when you opened the door originally, and therefore didn't need to perform the raising-step when you initially pulled away.

No, I made sure it was all thawed-out before I left - had the window fully down and up before closing the door to set out etc as I've been here before with these. I've got some bright yellow gorilla tape on it, so hopefully that holds until they can get the glass.

Some of it is, yes. Or all of it might be. I'm not sure but the thought did occur that this might be part of the issue...

Could just be a defect in the glass, which has let go following a few very cold to hot cycles.

Having just googled it, the lightweight glass is actually made of 5 layers laminated, so it's not just thinner glass. I'd have thought it would be more resistant to cracking rather than less.

@Jobbo - You're right... I hadn't really considered it or looked into it before, I just knew it was a weight saving measure.

I'll be keeping the hairdryer on standby from now on when its this cold.

I think the laminated layers mean it's stronger? But also lighter? Or just behaves differently because Autoglass have asked if it cracked or shattered.... laminated layers will crack.

Actually makes good sense on a dakar which will already weigh more and have a higher centre of gravity than a standard one, and probably more road noise from the tyres too!

Turned into drive, obviously low speed, wheels locked, car slid and I slightly crashed into my house. Wheely bin took the brunt of the impact fortunately so doesn’t appear to be too much damage done, will know full extent in daylight

Fun fact - my old Lupo GTi had thinner glass than a standard Lupo! For weight saving, obs. You don't need a Dakar for these kind of performance kinks.

It wasn't that it was a thing, but 4KG? Just sounds like a lot.
