Teng is good quality stuff.

I don’t think I’ve ever had to buy new 8mm stuff, it’s never broken for me.

Normal rules apply, sometimes it’s good to try and tighten it first to break the seal. Then you don’t risk damaging the driven side of the fastening when trying to get it to start moving.

That's the thing with buying older M cars, they've always got a surplus of M badges stuck on by over enthusiastic previous owners that need removing and re-homing (the badges, the owners should be already removed)...

I have a set pretty much as shown above, but they must have been my dad's as I am certain I didn't buy them. I just discovered that they are made of cheese.

This set from Bahco partially meets the brief, but it doesn't include any flat-blades, I already have some decent long torx driver bits, and I don't really need the other short bits. Anyone aware of a set that looks like the first image but from a manufacturer that can be trusted to not be complete dogshit?

edit: are Neilsen any good? Just seen this set and they seem to advertise themselves as automotive specialists?

Bits in an impact driver are sacrificial. Either buy expensive impact rated ones or cheap nasty ones to throw away. Just by lots

I get that, but they need to at least try and perform their intended task before disintegrating . The ones I just tried to use all just shattered. Might as well have been made of glass.... maybe they were past their use-by date or something....

I find Milwaukee and DeWalts own impact bits last the longest but no idea if they come in that size but it will be expensive for a sacrificial tool.
You’d be better off getting an impact extension and then the usual stubby bits.

Nearly ordered the Nielsen set off the long river site, but read some reviews which weren't glowing.

Switched to @Sundayjumper 's Sealey suggestion instead.

Impact bits are usually black, it looks like the bit holder is impact rated but the rest look like normal bits.

Yeah I changed my mind and switched.

Black impact thingies are chrome molybdenum as opposed to chrome vanadium.

Nielsen are just cheap generic chinese stuff but with an actual brand / distributor so you’d stand a chance of getting your money back if it was crap from what I’ve seen.

Most of their stuff you can buy identical looking sets in cases which look suspiciously similar from random Amazon sellers.

US Pro is the other similar brand and I have quite quite a few of their things, my everyday 3/8" sockets from them have been fine. Also 3/8" hex/torx bits. I broke one of the small torx bits on a bumper bolt on the Smart but nothing else would shift it either and I had to drill it out in the end.

A lot of the generic Chinese stuff is actually OK for DIY use. I've got a bearing puller kit that I used for the gearbox bush on the Ferrari & for the rear hub ball joints on the Discovery. Worked fine.

Set of these arrived, and they seem ok (used them at the weekend as I had to pop to my mum’s and repair her tumble dryer).

I’m having to use a pair of pliers to remove the bits from the holder however - is this normal?

No.

Usually they’re either magnetic (unlikely if you’re needing pliers), or there’s a collar that you’re not pulling on to release it. If it’s the DeWalt in your pic above it’s the black piece around the holder.

No - I don't mean when they are in the driver - I mean in order to remove them from the black plastic holder they are supplied/kept in. (ie the thing in the pic you posted)
