Metal utensils in non-stick pans

Started as Piggery Smokery : online artisan bacon sales. Bloody marvellous it was.

Then they started a family-run cafe in their locale which easily consumed (pun intended) all the bacon they could make - which effectively shut down the online sales

And that has also now closed. It's a generally sad state of affairs.

In truth bread holds equal value to the bacon for me, so whilst I probably could eat a whole pack in one sitting, in well proportioned sandwiches a packet of bacon with the corresponding bread would be too much for me.

I appreciate that your diet doesn't allow such delights as bread, but we're not all health freaks like you Dave!

I forgot about my other method of cooking bacon; in the oven on a metal cake cooling rack over a baking tray to get properly crisp streaky rashers like the Americans manage.

Much like @Jobbo I think I'm the only person in our household who's DIR. My wife sees pans as expendable, so they get ruined/scratched by her use and replaced far more often than I'd like.

As soon as a non stick pan is showing any signs of scratches, I'll bin it. Tefal non stick pans are always on a deal in Sainsburys or Tesco so I tend to replace quite regularly.

I'd be tempted to "Buy once, buy right" with a HexClad one but my other half would ruin it. Not by using metal utensils as she doesn't cook at all but at least once per month, I'll find she's dumped the cast iron pans in the cupboard on top of the Non Stick...

And no amount of asking her not to will stop this behaviour.

Just to get back into the "discussion" - bacon is generally cooked under the grill in our household. @mik On the rare occasion it's required to top a burger or the like, I'll do it on the skillet and use a burger press to keep it flat. If you don't have a burger press you can cover with foil and place a pan on top. Keeps the bacon ultra flat and gets it all super crispy.

As for utensils in pans - we only have a non-stick wok, and even then only because it was part of the Le Creuset pan set we got when we got married - no metal utensils permitted. All other pans are stainless. I can highly recommend Ikea's Sensuell frying pans - triple-ply steel and easily as good quality as the Le Creuset triple ply. Fantastic for doing fried eggs in where I can get my metal spatula in and scrape away happily if they stick

Since you suffer the same way, have you tried ceramic pans? I have a feeling they may be the compromise which will tolerate ham-fistedly levering stuff off with a metal spatula. But I've not gone so far as to try them.

I used to have a lovely stainless steel pan set I used for everything - easy enough to fry eggs on but then changed my hob to induction so binned the lot. I now have a crap mish mash selection, a few non stick ones but I don’t particularly car what utensil I use on them as they’re pretty disposable TK Maxx stuff

Our smallest frying pan is a relatively new tefal job - I can't remember what she was making, but mrs mik wanted to pop it under the grille a couple of months ago.

But the grille element on our oven switches off when you open the door. So you'd need to put the whole pan in. Which means you need to switch the contents over to one of the metal-handled frying pans we own.

So now we have a small Tefal frying pan with a lightly grilled handle. Lovely texture.

Same here, I've thrown all the metal utensils but my wife still reaches for a fork. The fucker even scrambles eggs in the pan with a fork!

I've tried more expensive vogue, procook pans and they don't seem to last more than a couple of years same as a decent Tefal!

I realise I've not done an omelette or anything else in our new house yet which might require you to grill the top of a frying pan. I suspect the ovens are too intelligent to work with the doors open like yours. FFS. I like to melt cheese onto my omelette and there's no other sensible way of doing it.
