Metal utensils in non-stick pans

Post by mik »

Heinz ketchup ad on the TV just there showing someone frying bacon and moving it round the pan with a (metal) fork.

“Metal utensils” include, but are not limited to spatulas, spoons, forks, knives, ladels, whisks, sawn-off shotguns, etc.

Would you use them in a non-stick pan/pot???

Where's the option of "I've got someone to cook for me" (private chef/restaurant/wife/husband/parents/slave) delete as appropriate

I give you permission to start one.

The correct answer is of course in a pan, but you put the bacon in whilst it’s cold (the pan) - hence it doesn’t wrinkle and make rendering the fat a nightmare.

It doesn't wrinkle if you use a press/pan/weight on top.

I think I am the only person in our household who agrees with you, but you are correct Mik. I have trained everyone else not to use my decent non-stick pans as a consequence. I do keep one big stainless steel pan for cooking mashed potato because I’ve never found plastic mashers to be very good; too flexible.

Option 1 obviously.

I don't tend to cook my bacon anywhere other than the gas bbq.

I like it that way, although it has converted me to using streaky bacon as that goes best on it and it comes out with the perfect texture. If I was doing it inside I'd just do it in a pan, but I prefer not to as it makes a mess and it's just generally unpleasant for the wife (her being vegan), plus bbq is always more fun.

While we're on bacon, I saw a tip online to roll up individual rashers and freeze them in a zip lock and I use that now. Pretty handy if like me, you're the only person in the house that eats bacon. It's there ready in as small a quantity as I need.

I will happily use metal (very carefully) in non-stick if I CBA to find the appropriate wood/plastic alternativein that moment. Having said that, I got a whole set of stainless pans so I could be as rough as I wanted and they'll still outlast me, unlike non-stick which need replacing every 5-10 years.

Having said that, I need to buy a non-stick frying pan because eggs and fish will stick very easily in a stainless pan, even after lots of testing with pre-heating temperatures, oils, etc etc. I still cannot get an omelet to release from a stainless pan. Non-stick is simply way, way easier.

Metal spatula… carefully… only. No other metal used.

But I try to use Cast Iron as much as possible. I’ve got 4 of them. I also only use hard anodised roasting trays and you can go to town with metal utensils on both

Same here, though if it's raining I'll do it under the grill. Don't rate pan-fried bacon; it needs to be on a large griddle or similar.

I’ve read this a few times but am struggling to understand the part in bold ?

Rolled up bacon, only streaky, done in the oven is particularly lovely as a one mouthful treat, done multiple times.

Bacon under the grill, sausages under the grill, mince, steak in the frying pan, mince must be 20% fat and then you don’t need any tallow or butter. Steak seasoned with salt, cooked in butter once the butter goes frothy.

Metal utensils are ok but not much pressure applied. We have tried some cheap and expensive non stick stuff and the “expensive” stuff from Tescos does the best, I think
It was £18. 3 years in, used at least twice a day and the only thing we have had to do is tighten the handle.

PiggerySmokery artisan bacon converted me to Streaky too. (That business venture sadly closed now - due to health issues apparently :( )

Started as Piggery Smokery : online artisan bacon sales. Bloody marvellous it was.

Then they started a family-run cafe in their locale which easily consumed (pun intended) all the bacon they could make - which effectively shut down the online sales

And that has also now closed. It's a generally sad state of affairs. :(
