The Watches Thread
Re: The Watches Thread
Did quite enjoy this (not Mr Wonderful, but the micro brands)
Re: The Watches Thread
I can't stand either of those two people
Re: The Watches Thread
So this just arrived
Very pleased so far - the colouring and finishing is excellent
Mad to think this cost £165 (and uses a Seiko NH34 automatic movement)
Great lume too (this is just from ambient light, I've not shone a torch on it etc)

Have been following Marloe for a little while as an interesting, fairly new British start up. Quite like their new Daytimer range...

Only looked quickly, but their Daytimer range display the coveted "Swiss Made" text at the bottom of the dial, but the other ranges don't appear toHolley wrote: Thu Jun 20, 2024 12:54 pm Have been following Marloe for a little while as an interesting, fairly new British start up.

Re: The Watches Thread
I don't know the background to 'Swiss Made'. Is it a certification of reaching a certain standard of manufacturing?mik wrote: Thu Jun 20, 2024 1:12 pmOnly looked quickly, but their Daytimer range display the coveted "Swiss Made" text at the bottom of the dial, but the other ranges don't appear toHolley wrote: Thu Jun 20, 2024 12:54 pm Have been following Marloe for a little while as an interesting, fairly new British start up.![]()

I'm no expert, and it's mainly a marketing "tool" as far as I can see : from wikiHolley wrote: Thu Jun 20, 2024 2:16 pm I don't know the background to 'Swiss Made'. Is it a certification of reaching a certain standard of manufacturing?
Most often associated with watches or timepieces made in Switzerland, Swiss law considers a watch to be Swiss made if its technical development is carried out in Switzerland, its movement is Swiss, if its movement is cased up in Switzerland, if the final inspection of the watch is conducted by the manufacturer in Switzerland, at least 60 per cent of the manufacturing costs are incurred in Switzerland.
Re: The Watches Thread
I recently saw on YouTube this guy who just bought watch parts off aliexpress and put them together and ended up with a very nice custom made watch for under £100.
I thought it’s a very novel idea and was totally unaware at how DIYable it all is - tempted to give it a go myself.

How about not having a sig at all?

Did he also cost up the various tools etc that he used?

Peanuts, entire watch tool kits on Aliexpress for a few quid.DaveE wrote: Thu Jun 20, 2024 7:43 pmLots of this happening, yeahMito Man wrote: Thu Jun 20, 2024 4:22 pm I recently saw on YouTube this guy who just bought watch parts off aliexpress and put them together and ended up with a very nice custom made watch for under £100.

Re: The Watches Thread
I suspect you might as well get a San Martin watch as above for £165 as opposed to using the same bits to make something that probably won't be as good. Unless you're particularly desperate to make a watch...

Re: The Watches Thread
Do you have a link to the video? Would be interested in watching thatMito Man wrote: Thu Jun 20, 2024 4:22 pm I recently saw on YouTube this guy who just bought watch parts off aliexpress and put them together and ended up with a very nice custom made watch for under £100.

Re: The Watches Thread
Seems like a lot of work when you can just buy in a movement. Does 'swiss made' add much more kudos?mik wrote: Thu Jun 20, 2024 4:09 pmI'm no expert, and it's mainly a marketing "tool" as far as I can see : from wikiHolley wrote: Thu Jun 20, 2024 2:16 pm I don't know the background to 'Swiss Made'. Re: The Watches Thread
Funnily enough I just bought something nearly identical to that but made by a company called Seestern (German for octopus)Mito Man wrote: Fri Jun 21, 2024 9:29 amJay-me wrote: Fri Jun 21, 2024 1:25 amDo you have a link to the video? It cost me £95 delivered during the recent AliExpress sale
Re: The Watches Thread
I assume the marketing folks think so.Holley wrote: Fri Jun 21, 2024 10:38 am

Whether it actually makes any difference to buyers is another matter.
Re: The Watches Thread
Just watching F1 FP3 on TV and Christopher Ward have the most cringe advert - I think it was written Broccers. “Do your research”
Erm really?

Is it just me who thinks this is utterly horrendous?
Re: The Watches Thread
That’s a massively expensive 4D gel bubble plate on your wrist. Jeez.
