Where to get (decent quality) impact driver bits?

Have a cheap manual impact driver which works fine, but the bits appear to be made of cheese. Would like to buy some decent bits, but it’s hard to find them as some walloper also decided to also call a new and completely different tool an Impact Driver

The electrical impact driver is hex too, isn’t it? The difference being that the bits specifically for that are longer with indents to be held in the chuck. While they’d still fit your impact driver they’ll be longer so I can see why you’d prefer not to use them.

The short bits are quite common aren’t they? Is it simply that your worried they will shatter if they’re not specifically impact bits?

Well said. The ones that fit in electrical impact drivers are 1/4” hex (6.3mm). I found Hilka bits sold separately - I’m sure they’d be a huge improvement, but would be better if I could get a “stronger” brand.

If an electrical impact driver can copy with 1/4" bits, does the mechanical impact driver really need 5/16" bits or is that simply to withstand the smacking with a hammer? Any idea what sort of torque you can achieve with a mechanical impact driver and how they compare?

ETA: Teng are a name I've heard for many years so they're not an Aliexpress brand.

1. 1/4" bits wouldn't fit the end of the driver - the female end suit 5/16".

2. No idea. The beauty of the mechanical driver is that you turning it whilst driving the bit hard into the fixing - so you very rarely have any skipping issues.

1. I don't think I've seen a manual impact driver that uses the smaller bits?

2. I have an electrical impact driver too, and partially agree - you can push the tool pretty hard into the fitting, but you're obviously not able to do so with the same kinda force as a manual one that's being smacked with a 2kg or 4lb lump hammer.

Teng stuff isn't great but also isn't terrible.

For home use they will be fine.
