Edinburgh -eating out

Post by McSwede »

Greetings hive mind.

Mrs McSwede has is taking me to Edinburgh as one of my 50th gifts. I'm looking for a restaurant recommendation or a fine dining experience that'll knock my socks off 😁

Any help greatly appreciated!

This time last year I would have highly recommended 21212, but not now of course.

I can't therefore offer anything, but I strongly suspect Mr @Nefarious will still have a few pointers.

From Zonda's thread a couple of weeks ago

The Gardeners Cottage is good too. Also see the Lookout (same people/menu as GC, but with views)
Noto on Thistle street is good too if you like the small plates style
Tom Kitchen's other place Kora is getting a lot of praise, but I've not been myself
Not fine dining but a couple of current faves of mine are Pera on Leith Walk - Turkish, almost cafe-style. I must've been 40-50 times and have never got beyond the "Sultan's Feast" set menu!
The Walnut Tree, also on Leith Walk, is a really nice bistro. The only reason I haven't been more often is that they don't change the menu too often.

But the one, the big one, my hot tip for the next big thing, and definitely getting a michelin star next time round - Aurora. No a la carte, just a 6-8 course tasting menu (with or without matched wines) - 2 choices for each course. Clever, innovative, really well thought out both as individual dishes and as a whole menu. Can't recommend it highly enough

Thanks. I'll have a look at that and propose it to the wife. 👍
