Ferrari GTO Evoluzione

Post by Ascender »

I noticed this car was due for auction by Sotheby's this week. I'm sure I'd seen it somewhere before (evo maybe?) but I struggle to remember a car which has ever looked so much like exactly what it is - the stepping stone from the 288 GTO to the F40. They only made five and a prototype and it was the last car Enzo Ferrari was involved-in.

A 2.9l V8 putting out 650hp meant it would do just under 230mph.

One of my favourites for exactly that reason. Like you can see an f40 bursting out of a 288 skin as if in some dodgy 80s horror movie 😎

Always though the front grilles / lights were a bit lame, but the rest is brutal awesomeness.

I’m the opposite - it lost all of the stunning beauty of the 288, whilst failing to replace it with the aggression of the F40. :x

It’s brilliant but not beautiful - but that doesn’t matter because it’s still massively appealing. I’m sure it appeared in the spy shots in Car back in 1986/87ish. So exotic and interesting.

I don't really see the appeal visually either. It just looks like a test mule of some kind with bits of F40ish bodywork on a 288. The 288 is ridiculously good looking too, so it'll always look shitter than it.

I like 90% of it. If you ignore the front 12" then it looks like a 288 with real cojones.

I kinda see your point - the arches are more pumped, and the wheels (rears at least) look wider, but the 288 wheels fill the arches far more convincingly. :?

The 288GTO was on my bedroom wall so I'll take that with the running gear from the F40, ta.

Yeah, 288 GTO is like my number 1 dream car so I'd just have that. The Evo is cool but it's like that 348 Enzo mule in that it's interesting but not something I have any interest in owning.

I’d I had enough money to own my dream car, an f40, I’d probably also have enough money to have a 288 and 288 evo to park beside it.

They would definitely be three spots of my very small supercar allocation in my massive warehouse of cars

Yeah, I say I've no interest in having one, if I ever got my collection of V8 ferraris I'd have to have it

Whereas this would drive me nuts.

I don't desire any cars as ornaments, and I imagine the type of scenario where I would think "ooh - I'll take the F40" would be absolutely identical to the scenario where I'd consider taking the 288 or the Evoluzione. :|

Yeah, it would be a real tough life taking one out for a couple of hours, then deciding which of the others you fancied comparing it with that day. Despite all being evolutions of the same theme I expect they all offer quite a different driving experience.

I like cars to look at, tinker with, sit in, listen to or even clean as much as I enjoy driving them.

I've changed my mind, it's fucking hideous compared to the 288. The front end looks like a Volvo B7TL Plaxton President 66 seater.

Owning it would be like marrying a woman who is perfect in every single way; beautiful, funny, compassionate, gives great head, fantastic cook. But she has a massive pear of clown shoes permanently attached to her feet. Every time she walks in the room, the first thing you see are a fucking massive pair of clown shoes. You'd never unsee them. Same goes for the car, it would always be disappointing when you open the garage and see that fugly front end. Best bet would be to always come at it from the back end, and always park with the front against a brick wall. Or drive into something and smash the fuck out of it. The designers really gave up on that front end.

This drove past my parents place in Poole this week.. The first two pics don’t do it justice as it looked great! However, the noise was absolutely sensational.. full on race car with number plates 🤤
