It could all be a Machiavellian manoeuvre so the Conservatives can say Rishi has to make some painful changes to taxation/benefits etc., but he’s much better than that last PM. /tinfoil

I’m not sure either party wants to be in power at the moment, because it’s looking likely that years of cuts/austerity/high-taxation are needed to recover from Covid etc. And we’re nowhere near the worst economy out there, so there’ll always be what-about-isms, but realistically we are starting from a reasonable position with what Sunak said during the last vote. Whether he sticks to it, or whether it even matters is another topic entirely! 😁

Two years of governmental stability will be welcomed by most, especially with what is seen as a quite boring, risk-averse PM. From what I can gather, Starmer fits that role aswell but seems to want to increase our debts further, and I don’t think there’s an appetite for that currently.

I’m sort of hoping the Lib Dem’s can find a charismatic leader and have a strong middle wing manifesto, so then it wouldn’t be C or L constantly opposing each other but rather a reasoned, rational position on todays important matters. Not expecting it to happen, but hoping none the less!
Cheers,

Ian

I've just seen a video with Angela Raynor levelling criticism at Sunak for not growing the economy during his time as chancellor. While technically she is correct even I as some who doesn't like Sunak has to see that it wasn't exactly something he could do much about.

Thing is if we had a GE she'd be 2ic, that's a scary thought.

Scarier is that the hard left of Lab haven't gone away. She could well be 1ic

It's just nice to see someone in the labour party remember they're supposed to be in opposition.

That's just because she's a gobshite, so she'll always be in opposition to someone.

I like Angela Rayner too.

Optimistically I thought Sunak becoming PM would do something to reduce the endemic racism in this country. With the benefit of just a few hours' hindsight, I've revised that view; I now think it's going to make the racists worse.

Also wondering how Sunak is going to raise taxes when he and his wife benefit from so many tax loopholes they personally save millions a year in tax!

That's the thing I don't get, how are we going to take more cuts and austerity from a government fronted by someone who's practically a billionaire.

He's hilariously out of touch as proved by all the botched publicity stunts when he was running for leader during the summer.

He wasn't brought up a gazillionaire though, he seems to have had a similar upbringing to most MPs. If you marry someone wealthy, does that mean you've instantly forgot all that?

Whether all the other MPs are out of touch as well is another argument!

I like the fact that he's had a (albeit short) successful career in business before entering politics at least. Some of these MPs have never achieved anything outside of the public sector.

Also, the fact that he doesn't need the job or the gravy train that follows it is probably an advantage.

He was upper middle class at best and went straight into banking.

I very much doubt that he's ever done his own shopping

Let's be real, none of the recent prime ministers have needed the job. Theresa May is probably closest to a normal person

Come on, his dad was a GP and his mum ran pharmacies IIRC. It's hardly butler and chauffeur territory. I know that probably doesn't suit the narrative though. ;)

I think you've got slightly unrealistic expectations as to how much money you need to have to not need to work!

All I'm saying is that he went from a relatively privileged upbringing to marrying into an even more privileged life.

I think he'll be exactly as useless as the last 5 PMs with an extra big helping of do as I say not as I do.
