My energy bills have near quadrupled since 2019. From £58/month to now over £200/month.

That's nuts Beany!! There's 3 of us in our house, plus charging my hybrid car every day. I'm £197 a month and £300 in credit

Yeah, this place is an old place (solid stone walls etc) so it loses heat fucking fast, which reeeeaaaally doesn't help....

It's annoying because all I ever have on are the lights, a laptop/telly and LED lights most of the time - I turn the heating on when it gets cold, it's not on a schedule, etc.

I should probably shop around, I suspect Scottish Power are taking the piss.

As a guestimate, a day rate that's double your permanent salary is a starting point. Double my salary ? Yes please ! It sounds like a lot but it isn't. Work backwards from there to see what your net income would be inside/outside IR35. Allow for holidays (if you like holidays), sickness (if you have weak genes), pension contributions, and anything else your employer pays for atm.

In purely monetary terms it's probably still worth it, as long as you're 100% sure you'll be employed full time with no gaps between contracts. If a few months of no income is a problem then think very carefully because that will wipe out the difference quite quickly. Some you win, some you lose. I had one contract that lasted almost three years. WIn. I had a year where I was unemployed for nine months out of twelve. Lose.

A previous manger of mine gave me some good advice: If you want to climb the corporate ladder and be senior management you need to be an employee and "inside" the organisation in order to progress. If you want to be a technical person and shun the corporate stuff you'll make a lot more money as a contractor. That's a good way to look at it.
