Have to agree with this Matty. We've done 27000 in ours over three years and I've come to the conclusion that no home should be without one. We drove past Milltek today, and out of the blue my missus said she's considering booking it in for a bit of modding! I believe they only do exhausts so she shouldn't get into too much trouble. :)
Not sure about the exhaust route, not heard one that sounds nice :( I'm still really keen to fit some KW's.

Did you buy yours / lease? Just looked at AT..... very strong money 💰
Bought mine. Yeah they've done well on value - but then everything has gone up in value so it's all relative

The 4gc still looks good. Mineral grey is a great colour.
Yeah, it's a handsome car. I was certain I wanted a black version, as I hadn't seen one in Mineral grey, but it's dark enough to really work.

A quick visit to see @scotta yesterday in the E-Tron involved a moderately trafficked journey there, and a late night (and therefore higher speed) return.

It’s about 70mile run. I think I used the brakes 3x on the outbound route - regen providing adequate retardation for all other situations. (Brakes are used to wipe off the final few moh every time you come to a stop as regen requires the motor to be spinning, but that doesn’t count).

As Mr Metfalfe has reported more than once - running at higher speeds for sustained periods impacts EV economy quite significantly. I reckon almost 20% more electrons, with the obvious impact on range.

On the upside:

1. I was also reminded how quiet it is at speed - for which I give much credit to the virtual mirrors. No voices raised for conversation, and mrs mik fell asleep on the way home - I could easily hear her breathing with the cruise set to “progress” (even before she started snoring a bit eh? ;) )

2. Adaptive cruise is proper witchcraft. EVs use regen to trim speed off so it is even more effective, and you can adjust the gap you want. It does respond to speed limits though, and going from a 70 into a roadworks-driven 40 kicked in rather heavier retardation rather than allowing us to comfortably coast down. More compliant. Less pleasant.

Aside: 1st experience of his new cinema room. Lovely pic from 65” 4k TV was expected, but the audio was mighty. Room shaking but tightly controlled bass, with crisp detail and awesome 5-channel imaging. Like. :geek:

She'd like it to sound more like her old 4-exhaust Abarth 595, but that is a tough ask for a 3-pot!

Driving down to Lymington today to get the ferry to the IoW and the Cayenne dumped all its PAS fluid

We were loaded up with the dogs & stuff for a weeks holiday so I didn’t want to turn around and miss the ferry and we don’t have another car big enough to carry everything anyway so we kept going. In a straight line it’s OK, low speed is hard work and stationary - forget it. Two tonnes of car on 295 wide tyres. It’s a good reminder of just how much work the PAS system does.

Having got here and had a proper look it seems it’s the rack that’s given out. Not something I can fix myself on holiday.

So it looks like it’s public transport for the rest of the week and then nurse it home again. Crap.

Bugger. :( Wonder if its the same inherent fault as with the 997 racks (mine had to have a recon'd unit).

I mean, I'm of the opinion that loud exhausts on anything less than a 6-pot should be against the law ;) and anyone with a pop-and-bang map should have their licence taken away.

Hmm, it’s obviously not going to be an identical rack but they’re both the same era so maybe someone cheaped out on a common component like a seal. A bit surprising on the 997 though, with not much weight over the front it shouldn’t get much of a hard time.

Oh well. This is the first time in nearly 30 years of driving that I’ve had a rack let go so I’ll just have to chalk it up to “s**t happens”.

Can you get a shit-in-a-bottle fix from anywhere? It might at least make the journey home easier.

Ouch. :( When Our Disco4 suffered crank sensor failure the engine would shut down when you were moving. You still had a few prods of the brake before the servo ran out, but PAS went “immediately”. I can therefore fully relate to you - impossibly heavy to steer at lower speeds - for Mrs mik I susepect it would have been impossibly heavy at pretty much any speed. Despite this VOSA disagreed with me that it was a serious safety issue.

They therefore agreed that LR were right to do a limited “soft” recall on a small range of VIN numbers that was very close to ours…. But didn’t include ours. I suggested to VOSA that this seemed like a pretty clear indication that LR had identified the affected VIN range correctly, but they were <shoulder shrug> about that too….

Dropped it off on saturday to local specialist CMC for a gearbox rebuild. said he'd have the car for 2 weeks. At the same time its getting my nice new bilsteins fitted so at least when it comes back it will feel a bit upgraded £DONTASK. there is a mission Motorsport vets thing at croft on the 3rd August i might be doing if its back in time.
Reassuringly expensive? What's the story with the Bilsteins? Upgrade or rebuild?
Factory upgrade option dampers which was part of their “Track Pack”

Same as https://www.monkeywrenchracing.com/prod ... -2-eleven/
Its still not back yet which is fvcking killing me. Pingdemic and holidays being blamed for the delay at the gearbox man. This is now week 5.

Latest update is that it needed 3rd gear plus synchro, 4th gear plus synchro, some bearings and some oil seals (expected). Parts arrived with the gearbox man last Friday.

That is precisely what I did earlier today :) It's only four miles from here to the Newport ECP. One of the benefits of a smallish island ! I bought one of these and a litre of fluid. They only had one bottle of fluid in stock. One of the downsides of a smallish island ! It took the whole lot and was clearly still leaking when I got back but I'm not sure if it needs a bit more than four miles to soak in and take effect ? And in hindsight I'm not even sure what the capacity is. So maybe a litre is nowhere near enough anyway. I'll check it again tomorrow.

On a small upside, after Googling and finding all manner of horror stories (such as a replacement rack from Porsche being £2500 + labour, not that there was ever any danger of me doing that), I found THIS thread where someone fixed a similar leak very easily. It seems the the passenger side seal, which is the case on mine, can be replaced in-situ. Not needing to remove the whole rack is obviously a *huge* time saving. And if the end seal is the only problem, a new or recon rack is not really necessary anyway. So fingers crossed on that one. If I can limp the car home then I'll pull it all apart next week.

Yikes. That must be a bit eye-opening. Although it's probably the same for anything with an engine-drive PAS pump ? It's just exacerbated when it's such a large vehicle.

Yarp.

Back in the day manual racks were lower geared, but I guess geo (castor?) was probably different too to aid the process. Modern cars without PAS are ridiculously heavy of helm…. Particularly when they weigh 2.5tonnes 😁

If your power steering cuts out, you’re manually moving fluid through the system and pump, that’s one reason why it’s extra heavy. Had a pump failure on one of our vans once, driving that was a workout!
