FAO people with more than one car
FAO people with more than one car
Short question - how do you deal with insurance?
Multiple cars on one policy?
Mirrored' NCB across individual policies?
Finally, which insurers are friendly to the above?

Re: FAO people with more than one car
Finding a company that's willing to mirror works for me.
Re: FAO people with more than one car
What they said.
I found multi car an utter arsehole. It conveniently consolidated all the insurance policies to renew at the same time in one fuck off bill.
I’ve got the Golf and the Lotus through Manning Uk. They mirrored NCD when I first bought the Lotus. The bmw is through Sheila’s wheels as manning weren’t competitive. They specialise in performance cars.
Re: FAO people with more than one car
All on separate policies, multi-car was about 20% more expensive after shopping around.
The biggest hassle is MOTs etc but I’ve got a reminder in my phone now for that.

From my experience - be careful with the mirroring thing, as other companies frequently won't recognise an NCB built up via mirroring, so you're effectively locked in come renewal time.
I had to go through this all last year when I added the Disco to the fleet. I was a bit shocked and surprised that insurers regard it as the highest risk of all of my vehicles (
). Anyway - I tried mirroring with the mainstream insurers I use for the clio and Jag (Admiral and Churchill IIRC), but even with the mirror, they were more expensive than A-Plan with none.
In the end, I pulled the same "trick" as I often do with the Westfield/TVR - get a specialist to quote (e.g. on a modern classics policy with restrictions), then get Adrian Flux to match their price on a "normal" policy.

Generally any insurer which is willing to give you a mirrored NCB will give you a proof of that NCB at the end of the policy, so you end up with 2 NCBs. I had 4 proofs of NCB at one point (none of them said anything about being a mirror of the original). Now I just insure the second car on a classic policy so I think pretty much all have expired except my main NCB, but it's never been a massive issue.

Maybe things have changed now, but I had exactly this issue with the Jag/Clio a few years ago. It was one of the mainstream guys (Admiral/Direct Line) - I had 5 or 6 years NCB on the Jag policy and mirrored it onto the Clio, but at the end of the year I switched to one of the b-list ones (Diamond/Sheila's Wheels or similar) and only recognised the NCB for the number of years I had actually had it insured (i.e. one year, not the 6/7 that it should've been under the mirroring arrangement).Jobbo wrote: Mon Feb 11, 2019 9:19 am Generally any insurer which is willing to give you a mirrored NCB will give you a proof of that NCB at the end of the policy, so you end up with 2 NCBs. ETA - NCB is all a bit of a scam anyway. Brokers basically conjure up an arbitrary figure (underwritter's price plus X), apply an arbitrary discount %, then negotiate down to another arbitrary figure (underwritter's price plus Y).

Re: FAO people with more than one car
I'm not sure how'd they'd know the difference? How do they know you didn't have a policy with 5/6 years NCB before the Clio? As Jobbo said, you just use the proof of NCB from your previous policy, non?Nefarious wrote: Mon Feb 11, 2019 12:04 pmMaybe things have changed now, but I had exactly this issue with the Jag/Clio a few years ago. Not saying you're wrong, I'm just wondering how it got spotted.

If moving Admiral to Diamond it would be apparent, since they're the same company behind the branding.

That makes sense, to be fair.Jobbo wrote: Mon Feb 11, 2019 12:10 pm If moving Admiral to Diamond it would be apparent, since they're the same company behind the branding.

ETA - the switch may very well have been Admiral to Diamond (or Elephant, which IIRC is also Admiral)

Re: FAO people with more than one car
Insure them separately but both through the same company (Direct Line) so get a discount, apparently.
