Pork action

Post by Nefarious »

With all the other million other projects on at the moment, I forgot to mention this one.
My mate's 944 S2 he brought up from London for me to give a little TLC. Already done a bit of a suspension freshen-up, set-up and cornerweight, as well as a few niggly jobs (interior stuff, exhaust hangers, electric bits). Here's it back from my spray man today. Looking pretty shiny :D Still needs it's final polish, but I'll let the paint harden for a week or so before we do that.

I'm not generally a porsche fan, but I have been very impressed with this little car while I've been buzzing it around from place to place. It's a 944 s2 with the 3.0l four pot from the 968 and only 27k on the clock, and it feels good for every one of the original 208bhp. Steering and gearshift feel just so right (I would say the latter was right up there with an MX5, but with a bit more weight to it). Impressed me enough to have me eyeballing Renegade conversion kits

I'm very jealous.

And the 968 had 240 bhp.

Mine always felt lively even with 100k+ miles on it 😎

Ah! That'll be why it feels like more than 208 then!

As per my twitter comments:

That looks great. Love the colour! 8-)

LHD Marv spec.
A late car with that rear spoiler.

The 968 engine had variable valve timing. The 944 didnt - hence the power difference. Belt drives one of the cams with the other driven by a small chain in the head. The nylon tensioner pad breaks down over time and can cause catastrophic failure - not a service item - worth getting Peter at Motortune Shotts to have a quick look - if there is no issue then he will refuse to waste his time and your money changing it. :)

They look much better with some 6mm shims on the front and 15mm spacers on the rear.

There was a great chip available - initially from Blitz but ProMax bought the rights. I paid £40 for mine from Blitz! Remaps for SUL and provides 225bhp and really smoothes the power delivery (much less of a spike around 4200rpm). I can't find the man's contact details though, and I think ProMax are now closed down (?)

They are hard on batteries with the big 4-pot.

That looks like a Janspeed back box on it too (?)

It looks darker than the rare Maritime Blue that the last UK cars were available in ?

Not a UK car?
All the dash is German - is that normal for a UK car?
I'll look up the paint code we ordered tomorrow - spray man dealt with it, but it's the same as others before - just better :D

I was wondering if a blowover was overkill, but that doesn't look like it would polish out evenly

I suppose with my typically meagre budgets I've missed the boat on 944s, although should I magically find a hundred grand down the side of the kitchen units, a nice one to clean up and use daily would be on the list; they really do press all my buttons.

Surprised by this, I've had a few 944s, one an S2 whilst I also had an MX5 and always thought the gearshift felt unpleasant. Too much throw and very heavy - almost truck-like. I still look at them and 968s occasionally and then remember I don't actually like driving them.

Excellent buy Nef. That's as lovely and correct now as it was when they first came out. I wish Porsche made cars that size now.

Nah he’s making do with the XJR, Cerbera, Land Rover, Clio 182, Westfield, Formula Ford and a jet boat at the moment

Love 944, would love one in Silver Rose with that classic multi-red interior.

I was surprised to learn that the overall height of Marv’s 968 is lower than my 996.

991/981/718 look great but wish they are 5% smaller. Ditto R35 GTR, R8 and.... well, almost all new cars in general really.

I guess we just have to pray he'll be OK with his meagre possessions 🤞
