18th Birthday Party

Off to one tonight and it got me wondering what I did for mine.

Suit on and a club in town - now I know I am really old - who wears suits to clubs?

What about yours - can you actually remember?

Family meal that culminated with a hideous bright green cocktail with sparkler and the entire hotel dining room singing Happy Birthday.

The cocktail was hideous and I gave it to my big brother!

I do remember a mate of mine suggesting we go clubbing in suits so girls thought we were businessmen. He was not a great success with the ladies to be fair!

Mine was a disco at the cricket club. Got proper leathered, spewed and pulled a not so young lady.

I can remember being in a suit to go to a club. Can't imagine it now!

Mine was quite subdued. It was mid-week so think I had a few pints with my Dad. I had plenty of fun at other people's 18ths.

21st was a different matter.

This reminded me that a club called Josephine's in Harrogate used to do 10p a pint night on a Monday or Tuesday night. Proper watery piss it was too

My birthday is in May, so luckily all my friends were already 18, meaning everyone could go out together

We went to TGI Fridays and got smashed at their bar. To 18 year old me, it was quite the evening

Had a party at my parents’ house, listened to R.E.M. (Green, birthday present) and snogged a girl I’d been out with some years before. The suit/nightclub thing was a few months later

Went to Chiquitos in Leicester Square for a big Mexican feast, then crawled through Soho before ending up at a random club close to home and everyone crashed at my place (well, my parent’s place). I just remember the club had a £40 entry fee but the doorman said he’d make it £20 if one of the girls gave him a kiss on the lips. Naturally the 17 year old with a fake ID did it.

I really enjoyed it despite some anxiety as pretty much every 18th bday I had been to at that point either involved a visit from the police or ambulance or trying to keep a diabetic mate’s blood sugar up once they had a dangerous low or having the house absolutely ruined as happened in 2 cases. As in full interior renovation ruined.

Went out for dinner with my family and a couple of friends. Dad managed to keep his cool till after everyone had gone, then hit the roof because my school had decided at that very day to get my parents down to talk to them about my 'behaviour'.

Wankers. They knew it was my 18th and could've chosen any other fucking day.

Still, I turned out alright.

Pantiles?

Mine was at the local Football Club, about 75 people in total. Unfortunately, I too am so old that I was wearing a suit!

we used to have our 6th form summer parties at pantiles- they’d separate the right hand bar and you’d get a stamp if you were over 18 to use it. Everyone just pressed their stamps on everyone else’s hand and transferred it over!

A few years on they used to have student nights on Wednesday there too - I used to turn up to work on Thursdays absolutely hanging.

It was an absolute shit hole full of letchy old businessmen men on the weekends though. And now it’s an old people’s home....!

My mates made me down 2 pints of some concoction they invented in one (after we’d been out drinking for a while already). It was basically lager, cider and several shots. I was unconscious by about 8 and out of it for the rest of the night. This all happened in a local “fun pub” (a normal pub with a dance floor and a DJ) that we’d been drinking in for 2 years, and was my 2nd “18th” party I’d had there.

It used to be so easy to drink underage - I had a fake ID that we made and printed on coloured card and laminated with sheets of sticky back plastic! I think it said we worked at a cleaning company or something. It was fucking lame but still worked when needed!

I have no recollection of my actual 18th. I know for a fact though that two days prior to that I was at Universe 'adventures on the pleasure planet' somewhere in south wales. Listening to Sasha, taking all sorts and generally feeling fucking brilliant.

No doubt I spent my actual birthday taking more shite to avoid a savage come-down and endlessly shagging my nubile young gf.
