Dishwasher
RIP
Had it for about 4 years. Now it's not pumping out water. Pump makes a noise like it might be working, and the impeller is free. The drainage pipe seems clear. I'm guessing there's a blockage between the two? We put one of those hardcore cleaning chemicals in it, but that didn't fix it.
The hardcore cleaning chemicals did let me know that the drainage is working a bit, as the water coming out the end of the drain pipe was burning my skin when it leaked out.
I've decided that really, it's beyond my abilities to fix it easily, and probably not worth any more time or effort.
Anyway, we've been very brave and bought the cheapest full sized one on AO.com - £189 inc free delivery
How long do we think it's going to last?

Re: Dishwasher
A couple of years same as any cheap appliance theses days, they aint built to last and the cost of spares makes it cheaper to just buy a new one.

I bet it’s just siphoning and needs the outlet pipe jiggling a bit.

Re: Dishwasher
Miele machines have improved our quality of life and general feeling of calm.
Cost as much as a good car though!!!!
Out dishwasher is a bowl and Fairy Liquid. Old school brap brap.
Once you decide to get a new one that is the best time to run apart the old one as you have nothing to lose but all to gain by fixing it and getting man points.
Dave!

If it’s actually running the pump, and at the right time, there can’t be much wrong with it. They’re not rocket science.

Re: Dishwasher
I was all set to bung a new bearing in our washing machine but the tub was plastic welded together and isn't designed to be separated meaning you can't change them. A complete new drum was £160, a new machine was £180.

Re: Dishwasher
We're on our fourth washing machine in as many years.
Bought a Hoover to replace the one that came with the house (it broke). After three repairs in less than six months I rejected it and had it replaced with an Indesit. That lasted until four minutes after the warranty expired. When the new Samsung one was delivered the driver asked if it was the main bearing that had failed, according to him "they all do that" when they're about a year old - gamble if it happens just before or after the warranty expires.
New one has a five year warranty, so hoping it'll survive.

Bosch here. 8 years old and as good as the day I got it.
You're doing dishwashers wrong.

Parents had a Bosch. It set itself on fire one day and took most of the kitchen with it. Check if yours is on the recall list!Simon wrote: Sun Sep 16, 2018 10:15 pm Bosch here. 8 years old and as good as the day I got it.

Re: Dishwasher
Our washing machine packed up last week. The door delay switch wasn’t working correctly so I stripped it down to find it was hot and had started melting the cables it connected to. Decided that Ididnt trust the wiring enough to replace the switch so bought exactly the same machine again from the local electrical shop. Delivered fitted and the old one taken away for £240. Which was decent I thought. Still hate having to spend on white goods though.
Re: Dishwasher
It isn't! I checked.
Of course, saying all this will probably mean it'll fail this week.

Re: Dishwasher
Another vote for Miele. Our washing machine is on at least once a day and has never missed a beat. Only call out was due to a ripped door seal. It must be about 13 or 14 years old now.
Dishwasher is on every other day probably and must be about 8 or 9, had to clear out the waste pipe once and that was it.

Re: Dishwasher
We've had a few Bosch/Siemens units, they seem OK and they get hammered in our house. The wife chucks all sorts in there without rinsing them too! We initially had my parents old Bosch that last about 6 years after they'd had it 7 themselves, then a Siemens which lasted about 7 and we replaced but the guy who bought it spares or repair told us it was just a failed element and £10 had it up and running again.
We replaced the washing machine over the summer with a new Beko (for a change) which is a 'quiet' model with induction motor, so no brushes to wear out. The brushes on our old Bosch wore out and got carbon everywhere causing a short and it blew up the main control board. Brushes, bearing and belts are all that really seem to go wrong.
Carl.

Standard purchasing MO for me - when one goes bang, it gets put outside and is carried away by the "locusts". I then go onto the local classifieds site and find one in my area for max 100 quid, has to be a half-decent brand. This never fails as there are always people leaving the place and white goods are a pain to offload.
Normally within an hour of the existing one going bang, I'm back home with its replacement, and they normally last a good few years.
The concept of spending money to repair any white good is laughable nowadays.

Yeah it does sound a bit pikey, thinking about it
- it works though! And is way easier than trying to buy new, arranging delivery and all that nonsense.

Sounds entirely sensible to me. Especially in an environment where relatively wealthy people are setting up home and some leave sooner than expected.JLv3.0 wrote: Mon Sep 17, 2018 10:08 am Yeah it does sound a bit pikey, thinking about it- it works though! As part of my fit out I’ve just priced up the new appliances I need - it’s well north of £3k... fuck.
Re: Dishwasher
That's it exactly - e.g. Siemens washing machine bought x years ago (can't remember - say 2 years back) - 6 months old at the time from a really nice German couple living 5 minutes away for 100 quid.Rich B wrote: Mon Sep 17, 2018 10:10 amSounds entirely sensible to me. In fairness, the transaction time was somewhat extended as they had a 10-month-old Golden Retriever to play with

Re: Dishwasher
I get that and can understand that it's probably much more economical sense than buying new each time.JLv3.0 wrote: Mon Sep 17, 2018 10:08 am Yeah it does sound a bit pikey, thinking about it- it works though! And is way easier than trying to buy new, arranging delivery and all that nonsense.
The thing for me is that I chose products rated for noise level, particular dimensions (particularly at the back, to fit around pipework etc). I couldn't 'afford' to be as laissez faire about the whole thing as you...!
