My new picnic table

Post by Coaster1 »

Grrrrrrrrr, just lost my post after spending the last 30+ mins writing it.

Can't be bothered now. I'll just post some pics:

Specs:
Comfort spec with air con
60,552 miles
Nomax Recaro buckets
Tequipment cage
Motorsport Cup diff
MOTON 2-way adjustable suspensions
Alcon floating discs (front)
Rennline engine mounts
Fire extinguisher
But it hasn't got original windscreen so it's worthless

I did 170+ miles yesterday. Engine feels muscular low/mid, with vtec-like top end. Car feels very 'darty' (aggressive geo and/or quicker steering rack?). Firm but not harsh at med/high speed, seems to get better the harder you drive it; only at low speed and at the worst of Britain's roads where it feels uncomfortable #becauseracecar

A couple of things to be investigated in the next service but hopefully nothing major.

I'm loving it! 8-)

Thanks bud.

Those who have met me know that I’m just an average Joe and not a wealthy person. GT3 has been my ‘real world’ dream car for a long time so I’m very happy.

The engine bay looks nice and clean. I'm guessing that once the air box is out of the way you have a bit more room for maintenance

996s in all guises are actually very DIY friendly (not that I would). You’re correct about the air box, and the engine can be dropped quite easily.

Mk2 Clubsport comes with Nomax buckets, fire extinguisher and proper cage (Tequitment cage is more like harness bar in comparison); Mk1 Clubsport also has an engine cut off switch in the centre console, and also single mass flywheel. In today’s market, an accident free, original Mk2 Clubsport car would command £10-15k more than Comfort with leather buckets.

The car came with Sports seats originally (same as my old Carrera 2), the first owner used it as an everyday car and unbelievablely, did 26k miles in the first 10 months. Then in 2009 (40k miles), he had the Nomax buckets, fire extinguisher and MOTON installed, with intention of doing track days. However, the car was then sold almost immediately as soon as the modifications were completed.

The second owner did 5k miles, then sold it to the third owner in 2011 for ‘mere’ £37000 (45k miles). The fourth owner bought it in Mar 18, drove it for a few hundreds miles and decided to upgrade to 991RS, so he sold it to me, the fifth owner. :)

I was lucky to buy it privately thus no dealer’s margin.

A bit like E46 M3 vs CSL I guess.

It’s interesting because you can look at it the other way.... 996 Carreras are such fun cars, they are real bargain of the century (providing one accepts engine risk, and 2k pa running cost / rolling restoration). I paid £15995 (dealer) in Feb 16, drove it for 13k miles (7 track days, 2 driver training days, a few road trips), and sold it privately for £14k.

996s provide a good canvas for modifications; for a long while they had been out of fashion but in recent years people have woken up about them. Take a look at RPM Technik for instance, their CSRs are selling for £35k plus, essentially just a cheap base Carrera and some modifications that can be done by anyone. (Ohlins, lightweight flywheel, OZ wheels etc)

When I was doing my homework about 6/7 GT3s, many ex/current Porsche racers commented the 996.2 GT3 (and RS of course) are the closest thing to a Cup car. 997 GT3s, whilst prettier and a ‘better’ car, are less involving than 996s and have variable dampers, stability and traction control. 996s have none of that and that’s what I want; Porsche won’t build cars like 996 GT3s anymore so to me it’s worth every penny. And I can pretend to be Tiff Needell / François Delecour. :P

Sorry for rambling on.

Exactly what I was thinking. Probably just as solid a place to have your money too.
