Disco 5

Anyone else noticed how prevalent they are these days? Particularly around the Chilterns/Cotswolds (plus Royal/Police vehicles in Windsor).. new ones (24/25 plate) are everywhere! FFRR too expensive, Defender too chavvy, so Disco 5 last option maybe? I was surprised to see it’s wider than a new Defender - maybe more practical to boot!?

Not many around here but loads of Defenders. I get the feeling they’re mostly bought by the same type that used to buy the original Range Rover Sports. Moderately successful builders & pikeys.

My Dad just picked up a new Commercial Disco 5 to replace his 2018 one. He loves it and thinks the new 6cyl diesel is much better than the old V6 unit.

I did tell him it was not wise timing given there is a new model out next year but given its a work vehicle he's not fussed.

Not sure about the comment re D5 owners being RRS types. My dad always had FFRR and Discoveries. Would never buy a RRS (though you could categorise him as a moderately successful builder / plant man (with an FF so still more 'moderately successful' than me )).

I didn't say that ! I meant new Defenders are the RRS types. D5 more likely to be a mum wagon - e.g. Mrs Mik had one.

I'd say maybe 7 or 8 out of 10 RRSs I see are being driven by utter twats. Launching out of junctions, cutting people up, racing through gaps they can barely fit through, etc.

Now that I've seen more Defenders, they seem to suffer the same problem - owners with comedic levels of small dick energy, desperate to prove that they've made it in the world, but can't afford a FFRR. I doubt it's a coincidence that the CEO and MD of my former employer both owned one each - at the same time.

Discos seem to be more chill. In fact, I can't think of the last time I noticed one.

Mrs mik had a D3 followed by a D4. Looked at a D5 and didn't like the direction they'd taken (plus I banged my head on the A-pillar getting into it. Twice).

Disco 5 owners seem to be rugger dads round here in the shires. You do see quite a few, though to be fair often on the back of a recovery vehicle.

Sorry - got you. That I would agree with. There's a bit of a difference and more appeal among younger people in their 20s and 30s that would not necessarily have been prime RRS types, but I think overall you're right.

They always have every off road accessory, snorkel, light bars, roof tent, lift kit, the wanky external box landrover do etc, then have 55” wheels with painted on low profile tyres

Yes ! They look like they’ll be awful for wind noise, and block the view from the door mirrors.

I'm sure I read somewhere the idea was you could put wet/dirty kit in them, but they're too small for anything like that surely?

Saw a Defender with the plate 'LE55 TAX' near Brum at the weekend, which I liked for the fact it's two complete words, which is hard to achieve.
