6mm hex-punched repair plate

Post by mik »

Can you get "repair plates" that, instead of holes drilled in them, have one-or-more pre-punched 6mm hex apertures?

This kinda thing

But with apertures that would take a std 6mm hex driver like this

Feels unlikely unless it’s a decorative plate that by pure fluke happens to be 6mm.

Mesh more likely but won’t be strong enough ?

Yeah I found mesh, but I'd also assume there is no strength in that (and the sizing is approximate anyway).

Guess I'll try the drill-hole-then-file method instead....

Hexagonal holes? Why would you need them?

Could you grind a 6mm Allen key down to a taper and whack it though a 6mm (or a touch smaller) hole with a hammer to form the hex ?

No idea why it’s so expensive
How about not having a sig at all?

That may indeed work. Not a bad idea. If I have any time at the weekend I might give it a go.

So I had a spare 10mins, and that did indeed work. Cheers for your braincells! 8-)

Drilled a 5.5mm hole in an old bracket, and started hammering one of these through, but quickly reverted to pressing it through in the vice (using a 7mm socket at the other side to stop the metal surrounding the aperture from deforming too much).

Mystery over: It's for those (extremely bloody useful) 6mm hex drive brushes that you stick on your drill.

Image

The smaller brushes are fine, but I've gone through a few of the flat 10cm ones when the brush still looks like new, but the hex driver piece has burst free of the plastic moulded body, and the metal part then just spins without turning the brush.

(I could flip to the other type you see which use a stronger threaded insert in the brush part, but that means you can only use it in one rotational direction, when some tasks are massively faster/easier when you can use the brush in both clockwise and anticlockwise settings.

It's not about the money honey - it's about SAVING THE PLANET from pointless waste. With very quick and extremely nasty repairs.

FOR OUR CHILDRENS!

Those nylon brushes produce vast amounts of microplastics. Won't someone think of the baby sea turtles

Which is also why they won't let me in Scarborough Sealife Centre any more.
