Is Peter Stevens annoyed he didn't design the T.50?
Re: Is Peter Stevens annoyed he didn't design the T.50?
He's not wrong though is he looking at those pics

Re: Is Peter Stevens annoyed he didn't design the T.50?
No they do look bad don't they? Are they all pre production cars or something, they seem suspiciously bad.
Re: Is Peter Stevens annoyed he didn't design the T.50?
Engineering start up can’t build cars as well as one of the biggest and most reliable manufacturers in the world non shocker

An absolute unit
Re: Is Peter Stevens annoyed he didn't design the T.50?
That's generally the kind of thing that doesn't upset me hugely - I won't see any of them when I'm driving.
However - some of those images even offend me
and if you are paying £bazillions for a low-volume creation - I can understand why you'd expect as close to perfection as possible, and be paranoid that if the bits you can see aren't *bob on* - what about the bits you can't?

Did people care about panel gaps before Tesla? Feels like it's a pretty recent thing.
As for what the bits you can't see look like, well this was the chassis Ferrari proudly put on display to showcase the technical brilliance of the 812

i think it was just an accepted thing that car makers could make cars reasonably well (because 99% of them had an established history of making cars.) You expected crap build from new car companies, but there weren’t any new car companies suddenly jumping straight into mass production.Mito Man wrote: Thu Dec 12, 2024 2:56 pm Did people care about panel gaps before Tesla? Be interesting to compare them with the early Koenigseggs and Paganis.ZedLeg wrote: Thu Dec 12, 2024 2:23 pm Engineering start up can’t build cars as well as one of the biggest and most reliable manufacturers in the world non shocker![]()

Blimey, it might read like sour grapes but he's absolutely right. Not sure what he's saying about Subaru; do they generally have bad fitment? I couldn't work out if the response that they build them to spec was dismissive because their production quality was so much better than Stevens was used to.
Re: Is Peter Stevens annoyed he didn't design the T.50?
True, but I think Ron Dennis wouldn't accept the F1 having panel gaps like that.ZedLeg wrote: Thu Dec 12, 2024 2:23 pm Engineering start up can’t build cars as well as one of the biggest and most reliable manufacturers in the world non shocker![]()
He makes the point that even the fwd Elan has neat panel gaps, so you don't have to be Lexus or a huge manufacturer.
And for £2.8m, you'd at least expect the panel gaps to be at least as good a say modern Ferrari and Lamborghini.

Re: Is Peter Stevens annoyed he didn't design the T.50?
I think even modern lambos/ferraris/Mclarens use piles of shims to sort the gaps, so it’s not as though that option doesn’t exist.
Re: Is Peter Stevens annoyed he didn't design the T.50?
On this point - the berks at Porsche have left wildly differing panel gaps when they've refitted the spoiler. I'm not going to get them to take it off and refit as from experience they'll likely just break something else.
Oh - that is in addition to failing to stamp the service book.

Must be surely? Some of them are too ridiculous. Impossible for those rear deck to roof glass ones to leave the factory like that in full production spec. GM is a details guy.dan wrote: Thu Dec 12, 2024 1:54 pm No they do look bad don't they? Are they all pre production cars or something, they seem suspiciously bad.

The 812 in the Ferrari Museum in Maranello. Or if you're asking for a location specifically, the whole car is like that if you look closelyGG. wrote: Thu Dec 12, 2024 3:52 pmthat's horrific - where was that?Mito Man wrote: Thu Dec 12, 2024 2:56 pm Did people care about panel gaps before Tesla? I've reflected on it and I will still have one
Price needs to drop quite a bit more first though...

Didn’t some of the early mclaren 12cs have pretty terrible build quality?
Not something I remember anyone mentioning for a long while.

Re: Is Peter Stevens annoyed he didn't design the T.50?
The Ferrari thing is the addendum that enables parts to be added without the chassis.. hardly representative. I saw my first 12Cylindri yesterday: looks good, but then I like the F12 and Roma
Also, PS comes across as a bit of a prick

He may be a details guy when he’s in charge of the design, but maybe it’s too much for him to be in charge of the whole company. For someone who was pissed off with the inside of the boot hinge on the Mclaren F1 to let though atrocities out into the public shows someone struggling to wear all the hats.duncs500 wrote: Thu Dec 12, 2024 3:56 pmMust be surely? But then, i think the T50 design is a lazy shell for such special innards.

From a nerd on the internet:
Talk about theatre and clicks. You say there were six new customer cars, but you feature what is obviously XP5 in three of the slides in this post. You can even see the red T-handle for the emergency shutoff. If XP5 is there, I'm guessing the orange car could be RX71 DUH, which is XP10, and the blue car could very well be T50 SVO, another production prototype and a very well traveled press car.
