Would you even consider?

If you had to choose one of these two, would you consider the Ultima?

1. Not a chance. But then I've never been a fan of them.

Would you even consider?

Post by mik »

I've always appreciated an Ultima.

Lots to like for me:
+
Super light at less than a tonne, huge power : extreme performance.
Manuel gearbox of course
Sound awesome.
Race car exterior visuals.
Can self-build

Accepting several not-to-likes
-
Race car interior visuals
Race car ingress/egress
Old design - tubular spaceframe chassis
No ABS
No traction control
No ESP

I'd always seen them as a "cheap" route to massive performance, but when a 2019 RS is offered at the same price as a 2020 720S (with 10k more miles) they appear..... somewhat less attractive.

720S performance obviously lags somewhat behind the RS, but with none of the safety nets - could/would you pedal the Ultima as quickly? :geek:

I do love an Ultima, that's a lot of money for one mind you. Interior doesn't bother me, nor does a spaceframe, but it would be less usable. Depends what you're looking for really. Would much rather drive the Ultima on track.

I think if any future value wasn’t an issue then I’d go Ultima. At that performance level it’s the more exciting drive that would work for me, I’d never get close to their ability so the more fizz the better.

I’ve always liked the Ultima but it’d terrify me on the road. Depends on use case. 720S would be plenty quick enough for me.

I'd definitely consider an Ultima but did indeed expect it to be cheaper.

I would put the Ultima in the £50-60k or build yourself bracket to be honest. it definitely surprised me they would cost that.

I expect the Ultima to be terrifying to cover ground quickly on anything other than a very wide circuit

If it was 1 of many sports cars I'd consider it for a spot in the garage but if i had room for 1 it would be something more usable. I have no doubt a 540c would be a better and faster road car than the Ultima.

We went to the Silverstone supercar drive thing on Sunday as my brother in law had a drive in a 620S.

As amazing as it was, the Aston Martin Vantage noise when it went down the straight was amazing, a lot better than the AMGs I’ve heard it in. When being driven by an instructor it was also incredibly quick. I think a Maclaren would be lost on me.

if i was choosing a car on gran turismo i'd take the Ultima but if I actually had 140 grand to spend i'd probably take the 720.

What Dan said, £140k for that McLaren seems like a bargain.

Isn't this what ruined TVR ? Thinking they could double their prices and compete with "the big boys", forgetting that their entire USP was VFM performance, that people only accept kit car build quality when it's also kit car price.

I assume that one of the purposes of the RS is to showcase all the nice shiny bits you can buy and stick on your Ultima? Do they expect to sell many fully built examples?

Since their beginning? Might as well reminisce properly and have an E.

The Ultima certainly has something special about it. You wonder where the money went on that RS spec though.

Speaking of spec "sequential indicators" er why?

15 years ago it would cost £80k to self build a decent Ultima, so it must be well over £100k now.

Unless you want to build one, I don't see why you'd have one over a properly developed car with safety systems and sensible interior noise levels.

RS is a model variant released a few years back. There are others in the range. All moved on from the previous “GTR” versions.

As one car in a garage of 4 or 5, for regular track stuff I think it would be incredible.

Otherwise, I'd take the Macca. Even if it was just to be a second car. I think living with an Ultima as anything other than an occasional treat car wouldn't be much fun.
Cheers,

Mike.

100% this.
