Just wondering what those teeny tiny insects that magically coat you at this of year whenever you walk in a grassy area are called?

I always thought thunder flies were the slightly bigger more beetley ones?

We get what we call corn/harvest flies depending what the farmer is growing each year. They get absolutely everywhere, including under computer screens in the past where they die and then you're stuck with them until they dry up and fall down into the body of the monitor or tv.

Well thunder flies or thunder bugs are what I’ve always called them. The annoying little things that somehow get inside computer screens

Proper term is Thrips but lots of people call them Thunderflies.

Neither, can’t recall ever hearing that in school either. Maybe these thunderbirds are a northern bug which have migrated south in recent years

Right, so I've had to research this to figure out what I was remembering from my childhood.
What I'm remembering is pollen beetles, they used to love sitting on brightly coloured clothing, which makes sense. When I was a kid we used to call them thunder flies, and they were fairly abundant where I lived in the summer. I don't recall seeing one for many years. Anyway, misnamed by us at the time and not thunder flies which are the Thrips that get into everything and seem pretty abundant round here now.
Dunno whether the change in bugs is geographical or climate logical!?

Ok I’ve been misnaming pollen beetles as another type of aphid all my life

I dunno what they're called (I've heard them called thunderbugs doon sooth) but I know they loooove getting into LCD monitors and getting stuck behind the cover layer....
