Right, so I've had to research this to figure out what I was remembering from my childhood.duncs500 wrote: Thu Aug 01, 2024 12:11 pm I always thought thunder flies were the slightly bigger more beetley ones?
They tend to appear prior to thunderstorms.Rich B wrote: Fri Aug 02, 2024 8:36 am so why are they called thunderbugs? do they make noise or something?
Ok I’ve been misnaming pollen beetles as another type of aphid all my lifeduncs500 wrote: Fri Aug 02, 2024 8:20 amRight, so I've had to research this to figure out what I was remembering from my childhood.duncs500 wrote: Thu Aug 01, 2024 12:11 pm I always thought thunder flies were the slightly bigger more beetley ones?
What I'm remembering is pollen beetles, they used to love sitting on brightly coloured clothing, which makes sense. When I was a kid we used to call them thunder flies, and they were fairly abundant where I lived in the summer. I don't recall seeing one for many years. Anyway, misnamed by us at the time and not thunder flies which are the Thrips that get into everything and seem pretty abundant round here now.
Dunno whether the change in bugs is geographical or climate logical!?
