New car day: Giulia QV

Post by Matty »

So after ruling out an LC500 because I'm not yet retired, and not being able to find an Evora 400 I was happy with in by budget (despite regularly annoying @mik ) I decied the only alternative was to get practical and buy a 4 door saloon.

2020 Giulia Quadrifoglio in the correct "Competizione red" with the important options of Harmon Kardon, convenience pack, carbon steering wheel. Missing carbon bucket seats (rare/expensive, plus lose heat + adjustment), forged wheels (standard are much nicer, albeit heavier) and carbon ceramics (as no one specced these). Overally, pretty bang on to what I'd ideally want....although would prefer calipers in yellow. Easy to do, but probably won't bother. The paint in the sun is stunning....thankfully has PPF to protect it.

Initial impressions are that it drives very serenly, quietly and nothing out of the ordinary, except for the incredibly quick steering. Cabin is a nice place to be, well styled but with some cheapish material in some places (improved on MY2020, mines a MY2019). Seats are very comfortable, with loads of adjustment. Very nice steering wheel to look at and to hold. Gearbox (ZF) is it's usual responsive self.

4 modes to pick - A (soft suspension, soft throttle, cylinder deactivation mode, valves closed), N (soft/soft, valves closed), D (firm/sharp, vales open at 3500), and Race (firm/sharp, valves always open, all driver aids off, no torque limit in 1st/2nd). In all modes, you can manually override the suspension, but nothing else it adjustable outside the preset.

Switching to D makes it noticably sharper to drive....but whatever you choose, it's just a monstrously fast car - even being torque limited in 1st/2nd, but by the time the shackles are off in 3rd you're staring a court appearance in the face. It does mean it's incredibly flexible, 3rd is all you need for every occasion...and it's such a smooth engine - like my old GTA, the engine in the centrepiece of the whole car. I definately need to get the exhaust valve mod, though - main reason to go into Race is that the valve is always open, and it massively improves the overall drama.

I've not really had a change to push it, doing some boring journeys in some less-than-favourable weather, but so far, it's incredibly impressive, and looks the absolute business in the comp red 8-) unfortunately, pictures in this light do it no favours at all....

(Wonky picture alert - I was trying to cut out of the gaggle of people surrounding it at the time)

I don’t know why you think an LC500 is for pensioners though.

Surely the only people who think that put S5 badges on the diesel A5s and cruise for girls leaving the club at 2am.

they’re basically an M3 for people who don’t want an M3! both 510bhp, both 3.9 to 60 etc…

they are very pretty though - i wonder what those wheels would look like in silver?!

You see so few of any spec, but they look amazing in the metal. Lovely car choice.

Alfa is considerably lighter though. And better looking.

totally agree - looks like it’s about 150kg lighter and the front end of the m3 is definitely best left on the m4.

Probably wrong - Alfa didn’t offer them in silver did they? The grey looks bang on.
