Podcast Thread

Post by Holley »

A bit late to the party with Podcast's as only just started listening to them.

Current Favourites are 'My week in Cars', 'oh my Dog with Jack Dee & Seann Walsh', 'Snooker Club' and 'The Paul Chowdry Pudcast'.

There's so many to trawl through and wondered what others would be good to listen to?

Sniff & Smith is pretty much the only one I manage to keep up with (kinda - often start but don't finish all episodes).

I'm probably going to get flamed for this as he's massively popular, but I find Jonny quite annoying. He's a lovely guy, but just way too detailed for me and find I haven't really been listening to anything he's said  .

He's rather less so in the podcast, as opposed to how he is on camera.

Sometimes it’s funny. Other times not so much. Always a reasonably high level of geekery though.

I'll give it a go if he's less detailed than on his YouTube channel.

With a keen interest in language I've enjoyed "something rhymes with purple" with Susie Dent and Gyles Brandreth. We've also listened to the QI Elves' "no such thing as a fish".

Smith & Sniff, obviously. But in addition to that the ones I always listen to when they are released:
Acceptable in the 80s - offensive reminiscing by a couple of 51 year olds
The News Agents - ex-Newsnight people doing a daily podcast which is generally excellent
Every Number One Ever - three 40-ish year olds rating every British singles chart number 1

Plenty of others on my phone which I either don't listen to every episode of or are no longer updated or are things I like but don't necessarily think are for everyone.

Started typing my reply ages ago but was distracted. I know what you mean but I find the podcast works while I'm not sure the Late Brake Show does unless you're in a languid mood. I get the feeling from time to time that Porter finds Jonny annoying too but is still very fond of him.

Forgot - I've also recently listened to a couple of "Revolutions Per Movie" episodes - Chris Slusarenko (previously with Guided By Voices / Boston Spaceships) chats to folks from music / film industry. Listened to the Paddy Considine discussion.

I think because most of my working day is spent being patient with clients, when it's now my time I just can't be bothered with long drawn out discussions. Just get to the point! Says more about me than Jonny of course. Will give the podcast a try as perhaps Porter balances this out.

I listen to all podcasts at 1.2x normal speed by default.

I didn't know that!

Anyone else listen to Autocars, my week in cars? I really like Matt Prior but he does this weird thing where mid sentence he starts whispering. I find myself constantly playing with the volume to turn it up (when he suddenly starts whispering) and back down again. In the early episodes I thought someone will surely mention this to him and he'll stop it. Now on episode 94 and he's still doing it.

Of course if I did my own Podcast I would always speak properly and have only very engaging/interesting things to say  .

I do listen to the Autocar podcast and enjoy it (much more than The Intercooler) - but since I pay for a subscription to Autocar and Prior/Cropley mostly repeat what is in their columns I don't feel like I'm getting good value

I find him hard to watch on YouTube simply because he's very sedate and detailed. I need ACTION goddamnit

Smith n Sniff is top of the pile although I haven't really gotten into the Q&A sideshow OTOSOT. Makes me laugh a dangerous amount when driving sometimes. Richard's long running Panda saga and Piss vistas make me smile.

The Linus Tech Tips weekly WAN show for two to three hours of tech friends just talking.

Cautionary Tales is truly excellent but too interesting to really chill out to. Tim Hartford's older series "50 thing that made the modern economy" I've gone through in its entirety too.

No such thing as a Fish is excellent but I'm usually to busy/tired enjoy it.

The Rest is History has some fantastic topics but I rarely have time these days.

Edit-spent five hours in the car today and caught up the entirety of OTOSOT and thoroughly enjoyed it. Some ace old TG and 5G anecdotes from them is the icing on the cake. Did not know the Indestructible Hilux mechanic was Lexus's UK Mr Wolf.

Listening to today's Autocar podcast and they were talking about a conversation they had with the head of Nissan about solid state batteries.

Nissan are confident that by 2028 there new batteries will have double the density (so can weigh half as much or you can have the same battery weight and travel twice as far) and three times the battery charging speed.

So that means a Tesla model 3 could either weigh as it does now and travel 600 miles or have the same 75kw battery and weigh 200-300kg less.

But like they pointed out, who would buy an electric car now when you know this is waiting in the wings?

The solid state battery has been just around the corner for a good 10 years now and looking at the pricing for Nio’s semi solid state battery I’d say we’re another 10 years away before they’re fitted to ordinary cars.
How about not having a sig at all?

Found Autocar's article on it, suggesting it should be cheaper?
