Griff Wheels Pole

So you are a man/lady/manlady/other with exceptional taste, and decide to purchase an achingly pretty classic TVR Griffith. The good one. In 90’s / early noughties flavour.

(As a certified non-expert) I understand all Griffs came as standard with 15” fronts, and 16” rears. Except the ones that didn’t of course (later cars), which were delivered with 16” all-round.

It’s a vehicle design that is more sensitive to wheel design than some others. Even though they are a small car, the 15”/16” split looks a little underwheeled to some (discerning) buyers/owners, yet others firmly advocate the retention of OEM sizing.

So hypothetically speaking, what hypothetically would YOU hypothetically do?


1. Non!

2. Early 15/16"

3. Early split-rim 15/16 option

4. Later Estoril 15/16

5. Even later Estoril 16” all round

6. Even later OZ split-rim 16” all round option

7. 17” all round “base” Cerbera rims

8. 17” Ford RS rims

I always liked the Estoril wheels on the Griff while the multi-spoke split rims make it look old-fashioned.

A colleague picked up a 4.0 Chimp with them fitted. They looked awful to me (not helped by some nasty corrosion).

The early 5-spokes were I think on the 4.3 big valve versions (to the extent there was ever a 'standard' spec for any TVR). Not sure how many 4.0s they actually made nor how many of them weren't specced with the 4.3's wheels, but more importantly I don't know which wheels would have been on a standard 4.0; perhaps the cross-spokes?

The Estoril has a centre cap which is too big and no dish so looks a bit aftermarket to me. The later wheels just look a bit too modern.

While I still think the Cerb 17s are the best ones, I quite like the staggered 5 spokes. Maybe a bit dated now though.

The Cerbera rims are lovely, on a Cerbera. Too big for a Griff.

I can't believe just how bad a selection of other options that is.

I'm guessing the spider alloys would ruin the turning circle, handling, rub on arches etc just like they did when fitted to anything other than a Tuscan.

Probably the Ford wheels out of that lot. Estoril look alright, but a shame there’s no concave to the rear ones.

Don’t like either of the Cerbera ones and the bbs style splits look awful.

Would probably search out a set of wheels from the Tuscan challenge race cars if I had one.

The only ones which don’t suit it are the Spiders.

The split rim OZs are my favourite.

That car needs a good sized sidewalk and the Spiders are too spindly and curvy.

The spiders are the nicest wheel, but just don't work on the griff. On a Tuscan, they're perfect.

Estoril 15/16 all day long.

Duncs view is the correct position, but I have a slight soft spot for the smaller splits on the black car. 7,8 and 9 would earn a look of disdain from me, it's one of the most wheel sensitive vehicles ON THE PLANET.

Also Tuscan style headlamps were possibly the worst thing to ever happen to TVR (even compared to Smolenski taking over )

I won't quibble over the extra inch too much, but clearly the Estorils are (correctly) dominating the poll. It's a relief for the wellness of this forum, but I fear we may need to stage an intervention on @mik.

17in spiders, in my fav colour.
Not a fan of overly stuffed wheel arches, 18in IMHO is too much on the front.

They were only made in 16" and 18".
