EOTR on Golf and TTS (robbing b4stards)

Post by Gavin »

So woke up this morning, went downstairs and was having my constitutional urination and noticed no car shape through the window. Turns out, through the night, our front door was jimmied and keys stolen for the R and the TTS. Nobody hurt, nothing but the cars taken but it topped off a shitty week where a mate died, leaving two young sons, and my MIL fell when the family were visiting and was hospitalised and broken eye socket and split head etc.

So, not gong to be getting another R so what is fastish but more discreet?

Likely payouts will be £25 to about £28k for two vehicles.

Scumbags, sorry to hear.

Is the budget to replace both?

Yeah, the Golf was only bought 3 months ago and it was £20kish, Audi, looking at autotrader etc seems to be more or less worth what we paid, if we can get that out the insurance companies of course.

I never actually wanted a Gold R, I wanted an Octavia VRS estate but petrol ones were well over what I wanted to pay hence the Golf. But I suspect we will be buying something utterly bland as the housebreaking has shaken my wife and daughter. Me too but less I think.

And cheers both.

Thank you all 3, sorry, Rich sneaked in whilst I was typing

Pay close attention to you daughter Gavin...

My son had significant sleep issues after our break-in - We didn't think much of it at first. I slept on the floor in his room for a few weeks and then he seemed OK. But we noticed he started leaving lights on upstairs, then he started following us upstairs or downstairs so he wasn't on his own. We thought we'd cracked it but then he started texting when we were out "What time are you home" etc.

He finally grew out of it but it took a good few years.

That's a nasty shock - hope you're all OK as quickly as possible. I also hope you get a bit more than £23-25k when one of the cars was £20k just a couple of months ago.

I don't know how burned you felt by the E-class but a Merc CLS Shooting Brake is a nice thing. I suspect your TT was only nicked because they broke in for the Golf, so another of those probably isn't too risky.

Bloody hell Gavin that is a shite week by any measure! Hope the insurance isn't too drawn out for you.

If you want something bland and quick-ish, then in the tradition of recommending something one owns, a Superb 272/280 may fit the bill. Hatch alone is big enough thata for most an estate may not be becessary. Same E888 lump but obviously lower state of tune. Not dynamically wowsers but a good cruiser.

Wow - that's really crap Gavin

Best of luck re fast insurance payout.

Couple of cameras (not sure if you have any today) might help reassure you / wife / daughter - several battery powered wifi camera options now that can go up quickly without extensive wiring etc etc.

edit: Any estate options in the SEAT Leon range that might work as a warm-not-hot alternative? (FR, or Cupra for hot)

That’s truly shitty, I hope everyone can get over the feeling of a break in.

Sad news about your mate but glad the rest of you are all ok.

The V6 and 272/280 Superbs always look like great q cars. The Police here have a couple of Seat Leon Cupra estates which catch my eye but must be good off the radar cars?

That's a rotten week. Sorry to hear about all of it. I've got no car recommendations to offer, just hope all will recover/regain their sense of safety (you included) in a short time.

Thanks all.

So the house now has a massive security handle and anti snap barrel, and the back door which is sliding patio style has a new 5 star rated anti snap barrel.

TBH, I bought the Golf because it popped up in Edinburgh which is relatively local. I wanted an Octavia VRs or an S4 Avant.

I also tried to look at a Superb 280 Sport but the photos of it were tatty and it was en route to the garage when I popped in.

We now have a 3 cylinder Fiat 500 through insurance to tool about in whilst we wait for the two insurance companies.

Had a quick look locally tonight and an Ibiza Cupra on a 16 plate, caught my wife's eye but she quite liked the TT so may look for another as I also think they came for the Golf and saw the Audi key on the shelf and went outside and pressed unlock to see where it was. (have caravan on the drive at the moment so TT was across the road)

Leon Cupra estate does appeal but the fact I will have at least 11 days until I can speak to my insurance company's engineer (person who tries to make you take less than your car is worth) is good as I can have a good look round and we can decide which 2 cars are the perfect duo.

The plan would have been to keep what we had for many years but hey ho, we are all fine after this.

Most annoying thing was my son was going in for his op on his legs today and we couldn't make it so back on the waiting list for him. Luckily the pain eased off at Easter in his legs so fingers crossed we get a quickish back up.

It really boils my piss when I hear things like this, i garaged my golf r and really did regret having it due to the constant thefts on the forum, it always more of a when not an if.

On the bright side, at least you can go car shopping to cheer you up and they say bad luck comes in 3s so hopefully yours is done for a while.

I am not sure car shopping is the thrill it once was. Especially away up North. Maybe need to check out these delivery companies as loads of options but all quite far to get a car and potentially have to take it back if problems arose.

Cheers Duncs. Just starting to look at what might be a decent replacement brace.

Still S4 Avants are like hen's teeth (in my price range anyway and post 2014) but not sure if buying something fast is tempting providence.

Sorry to hear about this, absolute cunts. For what it’s worth I have a tp-link Tapo camera which works great. It runs off plug in power so no batteries to worry about and connects on Wi-Fi. There’s no need for subscriptions but there’s something you can pay for but I don’t bother. Just throw an sd card in it and it’ll record locally
