Centrelock Wheels on Road Cars

Post by mik »

Prompted by @GG. 's new purchase and some subsequent wheel-related discussion.....

Porsche do this on some models obvs (was CGT the first?), as do Lambo and a smattering of others (Koenigsegggggg?). The advantages for a racing vehicle are obvious, but does that translate off the racetrack ? :?

(I thought we'd done a poll on this topic previously, but I can't find it...... :? )

What’s so difficult with using centrelocks?

In my mind it’s easier as you don’t need to piss about aligning a heavy wheel with all 5 studs. Granted you’ll need a better torque wrench but getting them off should be fine too with a good impact gun.

As discussed in GG's Fred

You need a special nut adapter, and you need something that can remove them (rattle guns "not allowed"), and accurately torque them back up to 600nm (443lbs.ft). Whilst the wheels are off the ground (for Porsche ones at least). So you also need a second dude/dude-ess to be pressing the brake pedal hard, or some other method of preventing the hub from turny turny whilst you torquey torquey.

And in the (unlikely of course) event that a nut fails - you aint got none backupz.

Look cool, but overkill on anything other top halo performance models.

I think I’d just buy a torque wrench, adapter and get on with my life. The wheels off the ground, no rattle gun sounds like typical manufacturer bollocks to make you visit a service centre.

I’d recommend you vote either option 1 or 2.

So long as you have a tyre place nearby that can get them off, I don't see the problem. People these days don't change their tyres themselves any more. I've never taken the wheels off either of my current cars - neither has a spare, tbh they don't even come with jacks any more.

Feck the tyres, it's more changing pads which would be annoying having to waste a few hours going to/from a dealer and paying £xxxx for it when you can do it in 30 mins yourself on the drive.

Rattle guns earn me a decent wage so the more people abusing them the better 😂

They do look uber cool. I'm glad the car came with Porsche assistance though as I don't fancy being stranded somewhere abroad and having some random french/italian/swiss tyre shop try to deal with it in the event I got a puncture.

Realistically the pads/discs will always be changed at the dealer. Does also mean faffing around taking it to Porsche to swap tyres which is a pain. Particularly as it currently has a set of P Zeros which I'd be tempted to change to PS4Ss (particularly as they seem to be N-Rated for 991) unless the compound differs from the Pirellis I had previously (which were a liability in the wet).

They look cool, but I struggle to see the benefits on a road car beyond that. I'd spend my money elsewhere on a car, but I guess they're non-optional on most cars which have them?
