Re: Ftaof jamcg
Do plumbers offer sense checking services?
Re: Ftaof jamcg
I think you should post your question here before he finishes for the day - that way we can provide you with uneducated theories, and loosely-understood hunches first.
Re: Ftaof jamcg
Aye why no.
My landlord is taking the piss, he’s wanting me to send an advance payment of £200 to get a plumber out to fix the flush on our toilet.
So I want to know how hard it would be for someone who’s handy but never done plumbing to replace one of these.

I know nothing about plumbing but I'll be honest, I'm struggling with this bit...ZedLeg wrote: Tue Mar 28, 2023 4:35 pm he’s wanting me to send an advance payment of £200 to get a plumber out to fix the flush on our toilet.

Piece of piss and about 15 mins in my experience. Makes sure you get the gasket / donut / whatever the proper name is which fits between the cistern and bowl, a service valve on the in feed is handy too if you have one to minimise spillage.
Cheers, Harry
Re: Ftaof jamcg
I'm not particularly handy but have changed a few of those in my wifes houses. The main fill/flush part is quick release, turn it 90' and lift out. The flush button is quick release as well.
A bit cheeky of the landlord but the stuff we've sent plumbers out for over the years and nothing is wrong, user error or clearly damaged you wouldn't believe.
ETA Obviously make sure its the same or compatible replacement!

Aye, he’s way out of line with that afaik, he’s a pain in the arse in general tbh. Can’t be bothered arguing anymore so I’m going to fix it myself and we’re going to move.
I’ve looked at youtube and it doesn’t look that difficult.

Shitty Landlord Zed - sounds like you’re better off out of there.
Re: Ftaof jamcg
This is what I don’t understand with shit landlords. Fix something if it needs fixing or tenants might get pissed off and move and you’ll maybe lose a months rent and risk ending up with scumbag tenants the next time.ZedLeg wrote: Tue Mar 28, 2023 6:01 pm

I imagine there's a lot of terrible tenants out there, so it seems like having an upstanding citizen such a Zed is worth a bit of decency.
If I was a landlord I'd be holding on to good tenants for dear life!
Sounds like you've come to the correct solution anyway @ZedLeg.

I’m pretty sure your landlord is legally bound to pay for repairs to stuff like the toilet and not you. Might be worth a call to your local councillor?ZedLeg wrote: Tue Mar 28, 2023 4:35 pm Aye why no.

As for the toilet it’s pretty straight forward. Depending how old your toilet is will depend how it’s bolted together- the video shows a modern toilet with bolts through the cistern. An older toilet will have a bracket securing it like this
https://www.screwfix.com/p/wc-close-cou ... lsrc=aw.ds If it does have one it’s worth replacing as the bolts rust and can be a pain in the arse.
However can I ask what it’s doing to need replacing? And if it’s already a push button could you possibly upload a picture of the cistern internals? As I’m a sad bastard who can identify manufactures of flush valves by sight
Re: Ftaof jamcg
Lay a log in there before you leave.
Re: Ftaof jamcg
Thanks for the response. It was the button that broke, it came away from the rest of the mechanism. I ordered the linked guy from Screwfix last night and I'm going to pick it up today (£5 shipping, fuck that).jamcg wrote: Tue Mar 28, 2023 10:47 pmI’m pretty sure your landlord is legally bound to pay for repairs to stuff like the toilet and not you. £12 and half an hour on my bike and it'll be fixed before the landlord's plumber would've even got here.
The thing that pissed me off was that the reasoning they used to try and make us pay was that we must've forced it. Based on these pics.
The bathroom is about ten years old and this shit doesn't last forever.

not sure when you'd flush if your shit last forever - presumably every xx minutes...ZedLeg wrote: Wed Mar 29, 2023 10:10 am
