Talk to me about Mondeos
Mate is selling
2008 Ford Mondeo Titanium X 2.5T.
Good service history, Mot till November 2023.
£1500. I could use something less will-it/wont-it than the Jag but I know sod all about these of that vintage and especially that engine.
It’s clean and tidy and he’ll likely take an offer.

Must be manuel I think, at £1500 it's a great price unless it's been to the moon and back.

A mk4 Mondeo is a lovely big family car, Volvo 5 cylinder engine, what's not to love for a bag of sand?

Get it bought, stick the biggest open cone air filter you can find on it and enjoy the lovely noise

Re: Talk to me about Mondeos
170k miles though. Manual. Probably due a cam belt. That said I’ve not read anything bad about them so far. I do 5k a year tops these days.

Re: Talk to me about Mondeos
Will it tick the the 5 cylinder box?
It's basically a 20th century Audi Quattro for a grand

I'm not that familiar with the 2.5T specifically, but for £1500 at 170k....
Budget another grand for a major service (and I mean major - cambelt and every fluid) check for DMF rattle, which might be an (~£600) issue at this age. Check for chassis rust and wobbly/worn bushes. The usual 15-20 year old car stuff.
I had a look at 2.5Ts and I don't think there's anything really common and really bad that comes up on them that I recall - just the usual old pipes, seals, vacuum stuff, etc - old engine shizzle that most garages know how to deal with, you shouldn't need a specialist for it.
IE you might have a road-detritus-punctured intercooler or AC condensor from the high mileage, and the like - you don't need a Ford specialist at laughable rates per hour to fix that, Joes garage down the road can sort that. Because it's a Mondeo.
They're not a touchy feely delicate car to drive but they're surprisingly engaging, quite agile/adjustable for what they are on the right road, like a fat Fiesta really, pretty decent inside (especially with the half alcantara seats), and if you ever needed to do 250 miles in one shot, it'll do it like it's nothing. My mondeo regularly did 200 miles on a Friday night, then 200 miles again on a Sunday afternoon, for about a year, and it was absolutely fine for it.
Also, there's better opensource/free tools for diagnostics for the Mondeo than I'd wager there are for the Jag. So if you get some weird obscure code come up, you can probably do £300 of diagnostics on it yourself before taking it to a specialist if it's something 2.5T specific that scares Joes Garage a bit.
Honestly, if I had that come up in front of me before Christmas when I had a bit more money to hand, I'd have thought very seriously about just spunking the money on it on a whim. Even if just so I'd have an excuse to remap it and throw a fruity zorst on it, and still be able to carry four dead bodies in the back with ease.
They're not the most exciting car in the world, but they're damned good cars for what they are, especially at that sort of price.

I mean, if he's a decent sort of fellow and it's not bent, what's the worst that can happen? I didn't think any cars were that cheap anymore...

Re: Talk to me about Mondeos
Saw it. Drove it. Bought it. Shook hands on £1400. It's really nice to drive, does not feel anything like 170k miles and super clean inside. Ex-Ford Managment car so mega spec. Goes well and sounds good.
Will certainly get us about with far less anxiety than the Jag has of late!

I had no idea they even did a 5cyl turbo Mondeo.
As a side note, so heated seats really need 5 different settings?

I started reading the thread, clicked on the link and noticed it had been sold, so it’s just good it went to you.
Cheers,
Mike.

I had a Titanium in a similar spec, same wheels etc. I had the 1.8TDCi engine which was unbelievably shit. It was dog slow and also had awful mpg. I’m sure the 2.0 would have been miles better.
It did ride and handle well as most Fords of that gen do. Can only imagine the 2.5T makes it a great all rounder.

Re: Talk to me about Mondeos
It's a different engine to what was in my S60 T5, but with all the changes I made to it, remap, turbo, exhaust, downpipe etcs, the single most enjoyable change was the daft induction noise from the massive air filter.
Made no difference whatsoever other than noise, but what a noise!

Re: Talk to me about Mondeos
Glad you got it.
I liked my old Mk4 Mondeo before it got traded in. That said, I had a Friday afternoon car that had then had a string of penny pinching owners. It needed a lot doing to it, but as Beany says it was fun to drive, handled in a way that belied its size and weight and was a reasonable on costs.
I always wanted a TitX Sport but by the time I was in a position to buy one I had the money for the Merc so it's an itch that never got scratched.
I think you'll enjoy driving it. Make sure all the tire pressures are correct before pushing it as I found the stability control to be super paranoid in mine when going round fast corners with uneven pressures (I later found out) and it would trigger and try and straighten the car out when pushing on. Bit scary. Correct tyre pressures fixed that though.
Enjoy!

Good purchase!
As I say, treat it like an older car (so watch the bushes, servicing, rust etc) and it'll likely be reet for a good while.
It is, after all, just a Mondeo - they sold plenty of them.
