It’s a tragic story. Poor lad. 
An ex-colleague had his lovely 911SC written off when passing the same air base one morning due to a similarly confused American turning across his path without checking….
Radio4 had someone on explaining that her husband - like all similar servicemen - had a specific clause cancelling his diplomatic immunity during commuting as this isn’t him carrying out his duties. This is specifically intended to prevent abuse of their immunity status following traffic accidents. Family members are awarded the same general immunity, but there is/was no equivalent exclusion covering their travelling to/from the base….

I got a right load of abuse on twitter about this yesterday. I'm a biker so you would think my view would be different but mine is it was an accident and no sentence will bring the lad back. And who hasn't driven on the incorrect side of the road abroad? I know I have.

Even if that's down to ineptitude rather than intent, or ambiguous wording, how it could be left to escalate to a diplomatic situation eventually resolved with a sentence likely the same as if she'd been tried at the time I don't know.
