Your collection

Post by mik »

Promoted by the fact some collector is selling a chunk of their (impressive) collection. http://bit.ly/3MflNQY

So you’ve just sold your business for around £800million. Well done.

How many vehicles would you have? Let’s assume you have the space to store whatever you want.

Personally - I’d want to drive them as opposed to own them, and I don’t want to be dithering between taking out the 6R4, the S4 or the T16. So I’d be chilled with one GrpB car only. For examples.

Also I want to drive them enough to get to know them. No garage queens.

I think if I concentrated I could keep myself to a four or five car garage.

If I had land I would just buy anything I thought was interesting and end up with loads of half finished projects all over the place.

So somewhere between 5 and infinity

I think I'd be more than happy with a five car driving garage, but I can imagine that doing a one in one out style of replacement to restrain that would be very difficult.

I'd have a hundred and share them with my friends 😂

I reckon 20 would be about right - that’s about the size of Harry Metcalfe’s collection.

So I voted 50 on the basis that I would probably get to 20 and keep spotting stuff I fancied.

25 seems like a sensible number.

What appeals to me would be going round buying shoddy / leggy examples of my dream cars and getting them brought back to their former glory. That way they're not faberge eggs and I'd be happy to put miles on for road trips etc.

I think you'd end up with 10 or so that you were really attached to, you could then rotate the rest as you see fit.

Edit - Also, wow at that collection of cars on sale! 8-)

Read elsewhere that these are Jon Hunt’s cars.

Five or less, otherwise they'd not get any use. But plenty of changing though.

No more than 5 or so in any of my houses...

I would have a few houses though.

I think that’s correct. Horrible man to deal with. He got quite upset when I wouldn’t accept his cheeky offer on a 190SL we had in, and when we got another in about a month later he got his PA to call up and make another low offer, which I refused, so he called up and said ‘don’t you know who I am’…

I think it was a birthday present for his wife. We used to sell them quite easily (mint restorations from Northern Europe) for £115-125k at the time and he offered £90k.

I couldn't give a number as I'm sure it would start sensible, then I'd start buying the odd cool car here and there as well. Plus I'd have a fleet of various bikes.

I'd want decent daily, fun sports car, track car, pickup, van, winter 4x4, minibus, as basics. Then you'll start with variations in each of those, town car and a big fast daily..

Jay Leno has almost 200 cars and in one video said he put something like 500-1000 miles on each one per year so I’d go for 200 as a sensible limit

So he drives between 100 and 200k miles per year? 🤔

Let’s split the difference and say he does 150k miles PA. That’s only 426 miles per day. Let’s also assume he averages 50mph as he’s enthusiastic, so that’s only 8.5hrs driving 7 days per week every day. Sounds entirely feasible.

Five cars, and just rotate the collection to suit your tastes at the time.

That way you're not letting cars sit unused.

I’d take it with a pinch of salt as a large amount of his collection is pre war steam and electric stuff which I can’t imagine would be practical to drive even 500 miles a year. He usually has 10-20 cars under full restoration and everything else is in running condition so his mechanics must be busy running everything once a month or so.

Correct!

You’ve got to consider what vehicles you ‘need’ to keep at your other houses.

5-10 sounds like a good amount you’d use regularly.
Cheers,
