Sugar

Post by Gavster »

Decided to cut down on the white stuff due to some odd reactions after eating ice cream recently.

In essence, my diet was quite balanced, with a lot of fresh fruit (3-5 a day) and a penchant for the odd chocolate bar and some ice cream at the weekend. Oh, and coke once a week. I wasn't ploughing into choccy bars every day or anything like that.

For a month or so I'm going to remove all high-sugar foods as a reset and see how it feels. That means not snacking on fruit or having dried fruit in my cereal, no coke, chocolate bars or ice cream. Last week I ate through all the remaining fruit/cereal etc, winding down to the weekend, then have been on a very reduced sugar diet this week.

And it's totally wiped me out today. Mood swings and discombobulated. Body feeling fizzy and fatigued, feeling weird af. Honestly thought it'd be a walk in the park, but no, it's really surprising how much it's having an impact.

I've never followed specific diets, instaed opting for balance and wholefoods with a good split of macros, however I'm beginning to feel like low carb might be a good path to follow.

I’ve just spent two weeks in Italy eating pasta and gelato multiple times a day, every day. Now back at home and on my usual diet I CBA to do much of anything. I had put it down to post-holiday blues but maybe it’s a food come down

Weirdly I’m still up for exercising every day but apart from that I just feel like lazing around doing fuck all all day.

I was the same when back from Spain. Meat and cheese for breakfast maybe with some tomatoes and then a pastry. A cake mid-morning. Some tapas in the arvo. Then out for more in the evening and maybe some ice-cream. Beer, wine, sherry throughout the day. Felt great - more awake, loads of energy, bit slimmer because not bloated.

Got home and back to the 3 square meals and back to feeling tired and cba.

I reckon a lot of it was breakfast and not having cereals. I really should try adopting the same diet and see if it works over here

Sounds like finally a diet I can get on board with! You should write a book. :)

I didn’t realise there was so much sugar in coke. I’m sure giving that up is good for your nostril health though.

I should have tried bringing a ham back with me - for what a few slices of Jamon de Belota costs in Waitrose I could've probably brought a couple of legs of the stuff home

Definitely made a conscious effort about five years ago to start cutting sugar, it was a good month before the cravings stopped. I was quite surprised just how strong they were.

Definitely have a think about fruit though, the glycemic index is good for a lot of the standards and it's a healthy dose of fibre and vitamins.

Although shockingly a super healthy friend of mine gave himself diagnosed borderline diabetes with an addiction to grapes.

That's the thing about fruit, of course it's good for you, but just because it's 'natural' doesn't mean we should binge on it.

I'm on holiday from work with no plans next week so I'm going to try and break the habit with coke/caffeinated drinks. I get bad headaches if I go without for a few days but I'm going to try and ride it out while I've got nothing else happening.

You can't go cold turkey just drinking Coca Cola and other caffeinated drinks. Watch Trainspotting again to prepare properly.

I'm just waiting for Asda to deliver 50 tins of lentil soup before I board the front door shut.

I don't have an issue with that anyway, I'm a middle class recreational heroin user.

Just a suggestion, might you be setting yourself up to fail? Annual leave is a time when often relax our regimens, rather than restict them. It might be more effective to try and break the habit during your day to day routine when at work, rather than the holiday period.

Nah, I find the headaches too distracting while I'm working. When I'm off I can just take some paracetamol and go to bed for a bit. I'm less likely to rely on caffeine to prop up my fucked sleep cycle when I'm off as well as I'll just nap when I'm tired.

I found out that my partner isn't going to be around either as they're cat sitting for a friend so this time off is just going to be catching up on reading and napping .

Fari enough, and it's a good point, I often drink less caffeine when on a break from work because there's no pressure to be awake and functioning quickly.

The best way is to trick your body into having a natural
Reflex. So if you want to ditch donuts, then eat a box of 12, want to stop the beer, drink till you’re sick. Your brain will then make them unpalatable.

I’ve been doing it for 40 years now and once the brain starts doing its thing it’ll be like Fabio is on the other side of the mirror.

I drank till I was sick for 16 years and all it taught me was to start a bsuiness where I could skip work without any repercussions and that hair of the dog is an elite hangover cure .

The boss of Pacari chocolates gave me 1kg of assorted fine chocolates back in 2019 and I spent the next few days laying in a hammock in Puerto Lopez eating my way through it all, to the point that I couldn't sleep at night and felt physically sick at the sight of the stuff. It put me off chocolate for a week, max.

The problem is the dose. If one beer or one chocolate made me sick, then I'd quit, no questions asked That's why I'm sacking off sugar, because a single portion* of ice cream has started to cause a nasty fatigue reaction. However, when I know it takes a larger quantity to cause that reaction, it doesn't provide any incentive to quit.

* half a hagen dazs tub - don't pretend any less is a 'portion'

I bought a couple of tubs of the dairy free ben and jerrys when it first came out but I decided to stop getting them as I don't think they're supposed to be single serving
