MOT possibly moving to 2yrs freq

Post by mik »

only a proposal at the moment, but some interesting discussion.

I think it’s a really bad idea - given that most people have no real interest in their cars, wouldn’t know what to check in a tyre even if they did ever look at theirs, and unless something falls off, they will put up with knocks and clunks and assume everything is probably fine.

As someone who does look at their cars, If I didn’t have to have one every year though, I wouldn’t get one. Loltus gets a service at the specialist annually cos people are sensitive to history. They check it over at the time. I don’t see much value in them then taking it to the MOT place round the corner if I don’t have to.

Lots of strong opinions on this though.

Honestly, as someone who is pretty hands on with their vehicles and knows every noise and knock, then no I probably wouldn’t get it motd every year if legally it only needed one every two.

For the general public with basically zero mechanical knowledge or interest then I think it’s a terrible idea!

If I had a ramp I’d be ok with every 2 years personally, as I don’t then an up in the air check every year is important imo.

The rot, rust or damage that can occur in just 1 year is surprising, after 2 years it would be severe in many cases.

I wouldn’t mind just because it’s so much of a faff getting it done but I’d want the penalty for obvious shit ie bald tyres, no brakes etc to be a 6 month ban.
How about not having a sig at all?

I don’t think it’s a good thing but in Northern Ireland it’s already from 4yrs old, not 3yrs.

That's just dumb.

I expect it's a diversion story for introducing a new cost of some kind.
