Renewing your driving license

Post by Ascender »

Should just be a case of enter your driver number, authenticate, confirm details and pay?

Nope. For some reason you have to enter ALL of your details manually, including passport number, national insurance number etc. Its as if the last 20 years of technology haven't happened.

And to top it all off, I have to cut my driving license in two, select a tickbox to say I will definitely do that and then send it back to them by post?
Cheers,

Mike.

There are even more hoops to jump through if you don't hold a UK Passport...

I didn't bother with the last bit - no-one's chased me for the old licence

I hadn't thought about the passport bit, that's a good point.

I did wonder if there would be any point. I'm sure they're not counting them all as they come back in and matching them to new applications etc.
Cheers,

Mike.

Look at it another way, would you rather deal with the Post Office or waiting for them to work through the mail backlog at DVLA?

Did mine last year, new one arrived a week later, never cut up the old one/posted it back.

Rub it in. I'll have to do the whole post office thing.

Funnily enough when I moved house I was quite impressed when how quick it all was to get a new license. Not sure if it's the same process, but maybe just being able to do it online and it coming quickly impressed me.

I guess since they aligned a lot of the state documents, technically - Passport, Driving Licence, HMRC etc - they use renewals as touchpoints to check data quality

I think Ascender is having a bad day 😀

It takes 5 minutes online and the new one turned up in 4 days.

The reason for asking so much detail is to be able to suitably ID you to process it automatically as opposed to getting it to a persons work queue which is apparently taking 4 months.

I remember it being a breeze too. Took minutes and arrived in a day or two.

I'm with Ascender on this one. The online forms for address change/renewal are shit.

Probably outsourced to a company that is owned by a Tory donor, they cut corners then ran away with the money.

Anyone who says otherwise is a Boris sympathiser.

Good to know, I got notice of it expiring through earlier this week.
Also reminds me I need to get passport renewal sorted as well.

I mean, of course its better than going to the post office and its definitely a first world problem, but maybe working in technology means I have a distorted view on how easy some of these things should be. As soon as you start the process the UI changes to some janky mid-90s design.

Hey ho, its done now and the old one is in the bin.
Cheers,

Mike.
