The Scimitar GT Thread

A placeholder for now. If it all goes wrong I'll delete the thread and claim it never happened 8-)

Long story, but my Dad has been a serial Scimitar owner since the late seventies. I have many memories of journeys in the blue SE5a he had through most of my childhood. This coupe turned up on eBay last week and long story short, I bought it. It's an SE4b, from when they switched to the then-new Essex V6. This is what Autocar said about the new Scimitar GT in January 1967:

"At a Glance - High performance 2+2 coupe. Lusty, low revving engine in conjunction with high gearing gives effortless cruising at three-figure speeds. Good gear change, but rather wide ratios. Smooth, light clutch. Ride and handling very good, and much improved over the earlier car. Light, accurate steering and first class brakes with powerful servo. Ventilation improved but still not ideal. Fuel and range very good".

Ventilation improved ! That's the win.

136bhp and 0-60 in 10 seconds dead. That was “high performance” in 1967.

I have a long drive to Lincolnshire this Saturday to collect it. More updates after that.

Pretty, pretty car.

Didn't someone famous have a Scimitar?

Excellent!

I love that you've bought something like that - totally left-field (in a good way)

You know how I know we're getting old? No one likes the new Ferrari and the top two threads in here are about flaky old cars

That looks good though, I don't think I've seen a Scimitar like that before. The rear end is really reminiscent of something but I can't place it.

I was thinking you could drop a later Capri 3.0 V6 in there without losing too much originality. Then I checked the specs and saw it would give you a whole 12 more HP

What is everyone's obsession with "drop an <xyz> in" with every single car ?? Although 12bhp is nearly 9%. Not bad.

I think it goes without saying I'm not buying this for the performance ! I'm pretty sure my Compact will be substantially faster. I will definitely autosolo the GT though, just for some fun.

 I didn't realise you'd bought it, I thought your Dad had done the bid and buy unseen thing. Excellent!

As I said in the other thread, I never knew they did a coupe version which is a bit embarrassing for a car nerd.

Needs some Perspex headlight covers like the corvette stingray lemans or Ferrari Daytona lm :D

It's a silly thing to suggest really.

Also put an M54B30 in it.

What a gorgeous car, I’ve never really seen one but that looks particularly minty.
