Dinny is correct. There are a few problems here.

1) Engineers, that is, PROPER engineers, are not respected nor probably paid enough. As such the title has been devalued, so...
2) Anyone that seems to work on anything seems to want to class themselves as engineers. See 'washing machine engineer' (repairer) etc.
3) Mechanics, particularly those in main stealers aren't really mechanics. They're 'fitters' at best. They follow a process and a manual without really knowing 'what', 'why', 'how' etc.
4) As a nation we tend to sneer at someone who learns a proper trade and actually provides a proper service, and also many people would rather discard and replace rather than fix. We live in a real throwaway society.

The opposite of the last point, no? Fix rather than replace.

It's rare Sunday that I don't have kids sports commitments so I have pulled the BBQ out for a play and it's riddled with mold

I'll burn a couple of kilos of charcoal to clean it out, still feels manly even though I haven't cooked anything

Our Sunday was exciting. We live right by a huge water tower that supplies our town plus Liverpool and a few surrounding areas. One of the mains pipes blew at 7:30 this morning, flooding 19 houses. Luckily for us, it was a pipe on the other side of the hill we’re on so we weren’t affected by that but the roads been closed all day and we’ve had no water.

I’ve actually had a really good, relaxed weekend.

Had a pizza picnic in Kelvingrove park and then a barbeque yesterday and spent today kicking around the flat and watching old Roadkill.

Looking forward to going into work early tomorrow to reassemble after the building work we had over this weekend.

Few beers at House of Vans and Underbelly festival on the Southbank last night and went out to watch the marathon today. Way too hot to be running in it.

Had some beers last night and ate some junk food.

Woke up this morning (afternoon) and still had a few beers left so have been slowly supping the hair of the dog that bit me, while sorting out some roast pork.

So a quiet one.

Someone did a drone flyover to try and spot the flooding but it had drained by then. You can see several water tankers recharging the mains. The vid starts just by my house.

In terms of the weekend, had a terribly pleasant morning stroll round JZM Porsche's coffee morning this morning, followed by a spot of lunch with a certain coaster1.

Wowsers! There was some serious metal there.

Yesterday was getting the car's 4-wheel alignment done on a proper hunter machine (after changing the lower arms last week). Then put up some pictures, helped my brother with his flooring and finally chilling in front of the TV.

Today was up and off to Battersea D+C home to see about rehoming a pooch. Unfortunately the young chap on their website wasn't described correctly and really isn't suitable for us, especially with the cat. Then off to a new restaurant for a Rodizio. Lovely!

Currently watching both parts of 'Britain's Biggest Warship' on iPlayer.

It’s a very good program, isn’t it? This and the RAF 100 year one have been some of the best television I’ve seen in ages; the whole family watched them together.

Yeah, really top drawer. Loving the detail they go into on the engineering side and that they're not dumbing it all down for TV. Good stuff.

Ah, the old “some of my best friends are engineers”. Engineerist.

They are though, means I can say what the fuck I want about them!

I’ve never met an engineer under the age of 40 who I trust with measurements. I’m currently trying to move 2016tons worth of engine and alternator into position with a tolerance of 0.1mm and he has his measurements backwards so instead of the foundations being 13mm too high, they are intact 35mm too low.

Test Technician - my most technical role.
Test technician installations specialist - my most hands on technical role.
Service engineer - my most mechanical role.
Senior service engineer - mechanical role but I get more reports to write.
Service traveller - project manager, mechanic, electrical, civils engineer and knower of all things.

In some countries I’m the least qualified but am running the job on site. I’d say engineer is over used but there are a lot of engineers who should be re-named teasmaid.

So, everyone is different and a crap worker is a crap worker whatever the title

I'd add that you actually work as a recognised Engineer.

I've a Civil Engineering Degree but wouldn't consider my self "an Engineer"
