1) Engineers, that is, PROPER engineers, are not respected nor probably paid enough. As such the title has been devalued, so...
2) Anyone that seems to work on anything seems to want to class themselves as engineers. See 'washing machine engineer' (repairer) etc.
3) Mechanics, particularly those in main stealers aren't really mechanics. They're 'fitters' at best. They follow a process and a manual without really knowing 'what', 'why', 'how' etc.
4) As a nation we tend to sneer at someone who learns a proper trade and actually provides a proper service, and also many people would rather discard and replace rather than fix. We live in a real throwaway society.
