I've always wondered why they're allowed to send NIPs out by a non-tracked and "guaranteed" mail service. I mean, I get that it would eat into their profits....

In 2008 I had a nip which turned up 6 weeks after the offence. I tried explaining that I hadn't received it within 14 days but the Police weren't interested and ended up going to court 6+ months later as any offer had expired.

I was 1st in at 9 ish and explained that my initial correspondence was weeks after the offence and now months later I couldn't recall who would have even been driving!

The pricks put me in a waiting room with a load of tracksuit wearing scallies all day for the CPS to put a case together.

Called me back in at 4 to say they had no case as they couldn't evidence when it was posted other than the date on the letter which doesn't mean it left them then and that the copy of the photo was so poor you could barely identify the car never mind the driver.

I still remember the bloke in a white Kappa tracksuit on first name terms with the security guys there

A relative had something similar in the last few years, nothing received for 6 months, not even a reminder, which led to him sitting in a room full of weekend brawlers like a naughty school boy.

The court said that the photo was a likeness, and so he had to choose to admitting speeding (perjury?) and they drop the not reporting offence or the prosecutor would push for both offences on the same day.

Its all deeply unsatisfactory from an administration of justice perspective.

Interestingly the 28 days is from receipt of the form asking for details - the Met's own website has a seemingly incorrect reference to it being 28 days from the date of the form.

If the NIP and 172 notice arrives a month late then you are going to have to substantiate the delay in receipt otherwise you'll be falling foul of a separate offence.

Its a process that's stacked in their favour given these things aren't sent by any recorded method.

For Joe Bloggs its just easier to accept a SAC for a minor offence rather than lose the option by questioning the validity of the process!

Mildly related but I received three PCNs in the post today and found another two online when I logged in after a mild heart attack thinking it was user error on my part, it appears my recent reg transfer didn't update with the TFL charging system, so I get a PCN every time I move my car more than a few hundred metres

That does look small. Can't believe they've never had a Gatso though?

I quite like leaving Waze on-screen, even when I am not using it to navigate somewhere - often very useful to get alerts (particularly for the mobile cams....)

Even though there's a 40 zone preceding it (and checking on Google Maps, it looks like they extended it since I've left the area) - they just ignored it.

I got overtaken by people doing warp speed in the 40/30 plenty of times when I used to travel through there on the regular.

There used to be a speed camera on the A38 outside Gloucester. One day it suddenly vanished.

Coincidentally, a local farmer had been flashed by it the night before.

Also coincidentally, the farmer had access to a JCB and lots of land where he was considering growing speed cameras.

A few months ago I was caught up a gun outside the village by traffic cops... I know they sit there sometimes but just totally forgot to check on that day. 60 mph road, summer morning, dry and sunny, nothing on the road and I had a "squirt up the hill" onto a bit of dual carriageway which is an overtaking section.

About a mile down the road I was stopped by a friendly pair of officers who chatted about the car etc and said there was no reckless driving, no dangerous driving, but as I touched 91mph (oops) for a few seconds, they have to report it rather than just giving me a warning. They did say it's "easily done" but that same morning they'd already caught a bunch of bikers doing 60+ in a 30 and more doing 120 in a 60 so I was definitely at the lower end of the scale.

They said it's a max of 6 points and £1000 fine, but unlikely to be anything more than that, license not at risk or anything due to the above. They cautioned me and I was on my way.

3 months later... I've been offered 3 points and £100 fine which I've jumped at to be honest. I've currently got 3 points on my license from 2022 which are due to come off next year and this hasn't affected my insurance.

It was also a little bit of a reminder about my driving although ironically I had already been checking myself so its ironic I got done after that.

It was a bit surreal though when the talk from the polis at the time was basically you're not doing anything dangerous, nothing wrong with your driving... but we have to prosecute you. Not sure what that achieves and it's a perfect example where if I hadn't already been reflecting on my driving, a speed awareness course would have been a very good thing.

Not a bad result for 31mph over the limit - or was it only 21mph over because they recorded you on the dual carriageway section?

I've been noticing that Worcestershire is very much worse than Gloucestershire for speed enforcement. Plenty of villages with long 30 or 40 limits through them where police bikes are stopped with a hairdryer aimed at you; being a bike parked under a tree or something you genuinely don't see them until too late. Even the Google Maps warning comes too late. I've not been done but am pretty wary.

No, it was 31 mph over as that's counted as a 60, so yes, I'm not complaining one bit, honest. And to be fair, it does sound like they will show some leeway depending on conditions and the circumstances, but I only have myself to blame as it was that 50% over.

Its a funny one up here because as I've said before, on every single trip I see downright suicidal overtaking and no matter how many cars I overtake, they invariably all catch me up at the next village where nobody seems to pay heed to the 20/30mph limits.

I was in Wales a few weeks ago having a nice brisk drive with a BMW M2 in front of me. It was going well until he started to take it a bit too seriously and began overtaking on blind bends. I promptly pulled over in a layby and flew my drone for 5 minutes as I didn't want anything to do with it if he smeared himself across oncoming traffic...
