The screws on the actual watch face are worse because you can see that whoever assembled it was trying to align them all horizontally but each one is off by just a little.

Tried on a proper Fifty Fathoms at Selfridges in Oxford Street last year. I was surprised how small the 42 version shows, seemed similar in size to my 39 Tudor. At £18k though you'd have to really want one to walk past a submariner at half the money.

Speaking of watches, I'm having a massive itch at the moment for a Rolex Submariner (the proper, no date version)

There's virtually no chance of getting one at list price from a dealer, so it would be a circa £10k purchase on the grey market

Technically I can afford it, the only thing stopping me, is me

IYRWT etc

I'm just incredible torn, mainly it's the having to pay a premium like that for something which is basically mass produced (but for which there's huge demand)

I would rather wait a year and get one from a dealer than from the grey market. Part of buying process is the experience and assuming your local dealer is decent, it would be a better experience. Plus if you do change your mind, you don't have to buy it when it comes in (which could be faster than a year)

Controversial suggestion (and you may spit your tea out) but try getting a homage/clone watch and seeing if you really want it? I think if you hate the look of it on your wrist then it may make the decision for you, but if you enjoy the feel of it then it only confirms your desire.

I get the cachet of Rolex, buuuuut - if I was in the market for doing some spendy on that type of thing (which I am not) I think the Pelagos (yes it has a date, but no stoopid cyclops) looks chunkier and funkier.

edit - and non-date if you go for the 39mm instead

I drive a Cayman GTS 4.0 currently. Should I torch that to save further embarrassment?

Haven’t really investigated what it is yet though…. Other than an modded Seiko SKX007 (?) and I suspect black hands and indices on a black dial could get tiring. Unless they light up black of course.

That looks cool Mik, and not bad value. I assume it’s based on one of the current SKX-alike models though they have a 100m depth rating and this is 20atm.

It has shades of the Blaken Rolex mods that I have always liked.
